Staff Profile: Tamara Brunskill

Tamara Brunskill

Teacher of Business and CAS Coordinator

After graduating from The British International School of Jakarta, Indonesia as an IB Diploma student, Tamara undertook a four-year BA (Hons) in Chinese and Management Studies from Durham University in the UK. During the second year of this degree, she participated in an exchange programme, spending a year studying Mandarin in Beijing at The People’s University of China. After graduating, she took a gap year, moved to Holland, her country of origin, to complete a Certificate in English Language Training (CELTA) in Amsterdam so that she could teach and travel around Asia. This is where her foray into teaching started; however, during her gap year she also applied to do a masters, thus finding herself heading back to the UK, this time to Manchester. There, she gained an MSc in International Business and Management from UMIST, now part of University of Manchester. This programme also involved a partner-university exchange, and given her affinity for Asia, she found herself on an MBA programme run by Kellogg, USA and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong.

Upon gaining her MSc, Tamara moved to Jakarta, Indonesia with the initial intention to spend a year giving back to a city and country that had gifted her some wonderful childhood memories. She taught Nursing students at a local university medical English to help them complete their mandatory rotation at The University of Sydney Australia, planning to then head back to London to join the corporate rat race and hopefully work for a Fortune 500 Company. However, the following year Tamara started her career as an international educator, first teaching middle school French and ESL before heading to Melbourne Australia to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary Education in Commerce and TESOL at Deakin University. This became her ticket to a life packed with international escapades as the years to follow found her teaching in Bangalore, India as well as Cairo, Egypt. Tamara has taught a number of different subjects in a number of different national and international curriculums, from the IB’s PYP, MYP and DP programmes to Victoria Australia’s VELS and VCE to UK’s IGCSE’s. While all programmes offer something unique, having been an IB Diploma student herself, Tamara is a strong advocate of the IB and aims to hone her craft in this sphere of education.

As a Third Culture Kid, growing up in South East Asia, attending international schools in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and then continuing her tertiary education in multiple locales, Tamara quickly developed a sense that she could make anywhere in the world my home. Thankfully, she found a partner in life who not only shared the same experiences as a child, but shared the same aspirations for making the world our playground. The intrepid globe-trotter spirit within them has allowed them to work and travel to some of the most stunning destinations in the world. Whether it’s leading students on World Challenge expeditions to Ethiopia and Nepal; summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in Tanzania; wreck diving in the Red Sea and South China Sea; trekking the Tongariro crossing in New Zealand; teaching students to surf in Byron Bay; sand-boarding in the deserts of Egypt; off-road biking through the jungles of Thailand; kayaking through mangroves in Vietnam; kite surfing in Bali; or running half marathons in Shanghai, they choose to live a life without limits and hope to ignite the same passion in their family, friends, colleagues and students.
