    Hari Raye

    Mr Raye’s passion for teaching began with tutoring Physics to pre-university students while he was pursuing his Bachelor’s degree. He took on his first international teaching position in a sovereign island country, Maldives, to teach Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Physics. He then moved to China about thirteen years ago to capitalise his teaching experience as well as to explore the third largest country in the world.

    Dominic Parker

    After studying Mathematics at University in the United Kingdom, Dominic started preparing himself for a career in education. He first started teaching in Guangzhou in China and taught English to students at all ages, from pre-school age up to adults. After teaching for a year at Jinan University in Guangdong he decided to return to the UK to qualify as a Secondary School teacher. 

    After 5 successful years at a Secondary school in Lancashire Dominic has decided to move himself and his family back to China.  They are all incredible excited by NAIS Pudong and are looking forward to starting their new lives in Shanghai.

    Joseph Gichana

    After spending a year in Sales and Marketing, Joseph launched his teaching career in a community-funded Kenyan school before joining an international school in Nairobi. He taught A-level Economics and Business Studies for eight years at the school while also serving as a discipline proctor. The lure of teaching abroad was irresistible when an opportunity to teach at a middle school in Xi’an, China beckoned. With his young family trailing, the desire to join a dynamic multi-cultural community grew and, after two years in Xi’an, he joined NAIS Pudong in August 2009. Joseph is convinced that the school’s excellent learning environment adequately prepares our students to face the challenges of an ever changing global economy. He is always happy to put his 20 years of teaching for the benefit of his students and colleagues.

    Joseph has a passion for nurturing young leaders as evident in his involvement in the Model United Nations programmes over the last twenty years. Currently, he serves as the UNICEF Lead at NAIS and is involved in preparing delegates for the annual NAE-UNICEF student summit in New York. Nord Anglia University recognised Joseph’s efforts and awarded him the Professional Development Award for Leadership.  He invests his time in his own continuous professional development and is a holder of an MBA degree from Tongji University as well as a PGCE from the University of Sunderland. Additionally, he is an IB Diploma Examiner for Economics Internal Assessment and Higher Level Paper 3 and has served as a co-tutor for the NAU TOK Facilitated Course.

    Paul Chipman

    Paul graduated from Leeds University in 1985 with a BSc in Mathematics.  He continued his academic career at Manchester University where he completed a PhD in computational fluid dynamics. Following his research work at Manchester University, Paul and his wife spent three years in Japan where he worked for Komatsu as a research engineer. They returned to the UK in 1992.

    After working at Cheltenham College from 1994-2011 as a teacher of Mathematics and head of general Studies, Paul decided to travel again and took up a Head of Maths role at a leading International School in Shanghai.

    Daniel Guiney

    Daniel taught History in the UK, Singapore, and Egypt prior to joining NAIS Pudong in 2016 in order to teach and learn more about China, a country with a uniquely rich past. Daniel’s most memorable teaching experiences include leading students into the burial chamber of Khafre’s pyramid, guiding a team of Singaporeans to the Hong Kong Asian History Bowl final, and teaching both British and German students about the First World War at Bayernwald cemetery. Daniel is especially proud of the record-breaking results the History Department have achieved year after year here at NAIS Pudong.

    Head of IB Academy and Higher Education Adviser

    Emma Hughes

    Emma is a Highly Experienced IB practitioner.  In addition to the teaching of English Language and Literature, Film, Theory of Knowledge and English Literature, she leads the Extended Essay provision as a core component of the IB Diploma provision. In addition, Emma supervises interdisciplinary World Studies essays as well as subject specific essays in Film and Literature. Emma is furthermore an active member of the IB Educator Network and is a qualified examiner in a range of components. Emma’s wealth of experience as well as student focused approach makes her the ideal member of the team to lead the IB Academy at NAIS Pudong.

    Apart from her work as Head of IB Academy, Emma also teaches both Key Stage 3 and IGCSE students. At IGCSE she is a teacher of Cambridge English First Language and English Literature. Furthermore, she is an examiner for the Cambridge English as a Second Language oral component. She loves teaching English at NAIS Pudong, and most of all, loves the way that internationalism is celebrated amongst the students and staff here and strives to incorporate this into all elements of her teaching. In her role as Head of IB Academy, Emma ensure ongoing academic rigour where students are supported to cultivate the qualities of the learner profile and the IB Diploma approaches to learning.

    Born and raised in Spain, Mr Oritz has always valued education and considered it crucial towards personal development and the best way to fight inequality and poverty. Mr Oritz´s inspiration stems from having watched other teachers positively influence other students. That drove him to join the educational system and become a key instrument in shaping young peoples’ lives. He considers himself a creative teacher that enjoys finding the resources to make learning engaging. He is a teacher that can bring a unique perspective to the art classroom, inspiring and motivating students to learn and encouraging pride in being an artist.

    Joan Hyejung Yim

    Joan joined NAIS Pudong in 2016 teaching Korean literature. She has over 25 years of experience as a teacher having graduated with a BA in Korean Language and Literature from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul. Prior to her move to Shanghai she taught high school students who were aiming for entrance to the top Korean universities. Joan has embraced a creative and critical way to teach students, conveying her passion for the subject as part of the IB Diploma. She adapts her teaching style to each student’s needs, exemplifying our approach to personalised learning.
