    Joseph Gichana

    Head of Humanities

    Joseph Gichana

After spending a year in Sales and Marketing, Joseph launched his teaching career in a community-funded Kenyan school before joining an international school in Nairobi. He taught A-level Economics and Business Studies for eight years at the school while also serving as a discipline proctor. The lure of teaching abroad was irresistible when an opportunity to teach at a middle school in Xi’an, China beckoned. With his young family trailing, the desire to join a dynamic multi-cultural community grew and, after two years in Xi’an, he joined NAIS Pudong in August 2009. Joseph is convinced that the school’s excellent learning environment adequately prepares our students to face the challenges of an ever changing global economy. He is always happy to put his 20 years of teaching for the benefit of his students and colleagues.

Joseph has a passion for nurturing young leaders as evident in his involvement in the Model United Nations programmes over the last twenty years. Currently, he serves as the UNICEF Lead at NAIS and is involved in preparing delegates for the annual NAE-UNICEF student summit in New York. Nord Anglia University recognised Joseph’s efforts and awarded him the Professional Development Award for Leadership.  He invests his time in his own continuous professional development and is a holder of an MBA degree from Tongji University as well as a PGCE from the University of Sunderland. Additionally, he is an IB Diploma Examiner for Economics Internal Assessment and Higher Level Paper 3 and has served as a co-tutor for the NAU TOK Facilitated Course.

    Martin Sykes

    Teacher of Humanities

    Martin Sykes

After working for KPMG in London for a short time after university, Martin decided to follow his conviction to train to become a teacher, and he has never looked back since. 28 years later, Martin still has a real passion for learning and teaching, and he excitedly puts the latest and best pedagogical theories into practice. He particularly excels at teaching his students how to develop their higher order analytical skills, whether it be in his Geography lessons or his Business Studies lessons. He also has experience of teaching other subjects in the Humanities Department too, after a long and successful teaching career at a selection of well renowned schools, both in the UK and in Asia. Martin began his teaching career working under Sir Pritpal Singh at a successful and popular high school in West London. After ten happy years teaching there, he decided to embark on a new journey in his life. He left the gloomy, rainy skies of London for the gloomy smog-ridden skies of Jakarta. Here he taught for ten years at the prestigious British International School, Jakarta, holding a number of middle and senior level positions whilst also fine tuning his teaching skills. After a successful and enjoyable decade there, Martin took the decision to move to Bali to help with the development of the Humanities Department in the fledgling Secondary School in an international school in Canggu, Bali. After five happy and fulfilling years there, he decided to move back to Jakarta, this time to teach at ACS Jakarta, which is renowned for its academic successes. This was another happy and successful spell in his career, but the urge to move to another exciting megacity in Asia grew too strong when the opportunity to work at Nord Anglia International School, Pudong came along. Martin is very excited to be given the chance to work at such a successful and well resourced school in Shanghai, and he is looking forward to promoting high order learning strategies amongst his students in the school.
