We asked Sofieke about her time at school here and how she became a high achieving student
On Sofieke's first day at school, "I did not speak a word of English causing me not to be able to understand the teachers. I was just nodding my head when my teacher was talking to me. I had no clue what she was saying. I would love to replay that moment now, and find out what she actually told me."
Whilst the language was daunting, Sofieke was also surprised by how easily she made new friends, how friendly and welcoming the teachers were. The uniform took a little gettting used to as she was not used to wearing one in her native country of Holland.
Sofieke has had many successes during her time at the school, her personal best achievement? "Winning 2011 Football ACAMIS with only 7 players and 33 degrees in Taiwan was one of the biggest sporting achievements in the many years I have been in BISS. We did not expect to walk away with any trophy causing this to be a great positive shock."
She has also enjoyed her international schooling for "all the international friends and relationship I have built, which I will try to hold for a lifetime". "The activity weeks and ACAMIS trips that I have been on where great fun and would have never wanted to miss out on!". she further explains.
Sofieke is a well-liked student and gets on easily with the teaching team. She wanted to show appreciation for: Mr Anderson who was an inspiration and helped her successfully through her IGCSE Science course!; and, Ms Drew (PE teacher) for, "Hilarious and fun moments during sport events, creating a great team bond and many fond memories." Sofieke's sporting prowess and influence has also motivated her to chose to study Sport Management.
Sofieke holds her school in high regard. She is a confident public speaker and she puts much of this down to, "The atmosphere of respect and relationships between teachers and students and vice versa, as well as student to student is something I cherish." Sofieke is a well-rounded, active member of many school teams (Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball), she is captain this year of three: football, basketball and volleyball. She has taken on many additional student leadership roles within the student council, global classroom and has also been nominated Service Ambassador for the school.
The multi-cultural environment has been beneficial for Sofieke, not only adding English as a working language but also being immersed in Chinese Mandarin learning. She is now so proficient, she has been involved in a project to teach English to Chinese local children.
"Seeing more than 100 nationalities together everyday creates a special world on its own!"
Having come to the British International School Shanghai with no ability to speak, write or read any English at all Sofieke has studied hard and through extra efforts from the English as an Additional Language (EAL) team of teachers she will be taking Higher Level English Literature and Language IB exam with a predicted grade of a level 6.
Should Sofieke gain all her predicted grades, her dream to continue her studies in Sport Management in either The Netherlands (Amsterdam) or in the United Kingdom (Loughborough) will be an ambition she can achieve.
"I would like to continue in the global environment I have been in for the past 7 years. Bringing people together and getting results by great leadership. Of course I would like to keep the relationship and meet up with the friends I have made!"
