Pleased to Meet You…Eleanor Jess

04 December 2014

This week we spoke to Eleanor Jess, Head of Key Stage 2.

  • Pleased to Meet You...Eleanor Jess

How long have you been at BISS Puxi? I have been here since August 2013 - one year and a little bit.

What were you doing before you came to Shanghai? I had been a Head Teacher of a large primary school in Stirling, Scotland for 12 years.  That was a job I really loved but I felt it was time for a change.  I didn't dare to dream when I was looking for new opportunities that I would end up teaching at BISS Puxi and living in Shanghai, but here I am!

What do you enjoy most about teaching? The children!  There is nothing better than teaching them and watching when they work hard and then understand something new.  You can almost see the light bulb going on when you look at their faces, and they feel so proud!  Apart from that I enjoy the variety of the job.  There is never a dull moment and always a story at the end of the day - usually one that makes me smile.

What is your favourite place in Shanghai? Definitely The Bund.  I saw a photo of it in 'National Geographic' many years ago and didn't believe it was in China as the buildings were so European.  Every so often I take myself there to remind myself how lucky I am to now be living here. Then I stop off at the Peace Hotel to admire the décor, have a coffee and watch the ballroom dancers.

Where are you from and what do you miss from home? I come from Scotland and live close to Edinburgh, a beautiful city!  I miss my family and friends, particularly my children who both work in Scotland, and am looking forward to seeing them at Christmas.  Apart from that I miss days when I can go hill walking in Scotland.  A steep climb that keeps me fit and a beautiful view at the end...perfect.  I don't miss the weather though!
