This is a great strength in that it serves to refresh the community with new ideas, energy and perspectives. It also prevents the community from becoming too insular, which is not uncommon in places in our home countries, even our own home towns and cities where the local population is static. This is an important element of our lives in that it means our students in particular are used to and very good at welcoming new students and new families. They enjoy meeting new people and finding out about them and their lives and they readily remember what it was like to be new themselves. It is good to be welcoming new families (25 new students) this week and again they come from all over the world.
I promised that I would update you on staff recruitment. We have a number of very high quality new staff who we have secured from our recruitment trips to the UK and you will find the pen portraits of our new secondary staff up on the website. We have concluded most of our staff recruitment, we just have a couple of unfilled vacancies in primary and we will post the new primary staff on the website over the next couple of weeks.
One of the key new appointments is the introduction of a new senior management post Assistant Head for Global Languages. Mrs Fiona McConnon is a Modern Foreign Languages graduate, with a post graduate qualification in Mandarin. She is married to a Chinese gentleman and has lived and worked in China on and off for a number of years. She has extensive management experience and joins us from a prestigious girls’ independent school in London. Her remit will be to lead and further develop the rich and diverse languages provision including native and non-native Mandarin, Dutch French, German, Korean and Spanish. She is very excited about this new challenge and the new life for her family in Shanghai.
Recently I wrote to you about the various university offers that our senior students have received including those from Cambridge, Duke, University College London, Imperial College and North Western. We have now also had an offer from Penn State. We are still waiting for other offers from the UK and we will not receive the bulk of the offer from the US and Asia until the spring.
However it is not just our senior students who enjoy success in applications to prestigious schools and colleges, some of our younger students have also secured places at top schools around the world when forced for one reason or other to move on. In recent years students from primary and secondary have secured or been offered places at high quality schools in the UK independent sector such as Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Malvern, St Mary’s Calne, Oundle, Sevenoaks and Headington. In addition, pupils have secured places at prestigious and much sought after schools all over the globe including India, the USA, Australia and Holland.
This is further evidence of the outstanding academic levels achieved across the age groups through the hard work and skilful endeavour of staff and students. Day in and day out the exciting academic experiences our students are enjoying are making the difference and helping them to fulfil their potential.
If you have visited the ground floor of the primary building you may have noticed a couple of empty offices opposite the Primary Theatre. These are temporarily vacant because the Nord Anglia Education China Regional team have relocated to some new offices on Baole Lu just up past the Shanghai Racket Club. The school’s accounts department have also moved to the new premises although by appointment and at busy times of the year they will be on site as needed. The reason for this move is to allow us to further develop our site with the intention of creating a performing arts hub around a refurbished Primary Theatre and Parents’ Hub around a refurbished primary foyer area. We will be fine tuning these ideas over the next month or so with work scheduled in the summer.
