Maths Week Gets Students Excited by Maths

14 March 2014

This week is Maths Week and throughout the primary school the children have been getting involved in various maths activities and challenges.

Some of the Maths activities the children have been taking part in this week.

Maths Week is a fantastic opportunity for children to engage in Maths activities, which they may not normally get a chance to experience in a normal lesson. Over the course of the week the whole of the primary school participated in different Maths activities designed to challenge their thinking and develop their maths problem solving skills.

The activities included solving capacity problems, a mathematical vegetable challenge, guess the height of the teacher competition, making fudge, a bake sale and building the Great Wall of China!

Mathematical vegetable competition

A week ago the children were set the challenge to go out and find a very heavy potato or a huge pumpkin. Key stage 1 were looking for the heaviest potato and Key Stage 2 were searching for the pumpkin with the largest circumference.  The winner of our challenge in Key Stage 1 was Alex King in 1X for a mighty potato and Chloe Noublanche in 3U for her massive pumpkin.

Year 2 Bake Sale

On Wednesday, Year 2 children had the opportunity to use their knowledge of money to calculate prices and give back the right change in a real life situation.  Children from all classes took turns to meet, greet and serve the rest of the school yummy treats, kindly donated by the Year 2 parents.

They had been eagerly awaiting this event after their amazingly successful charity fun run, and were looking forward to raising even more money for ‘Cool Earth’, who work to protect and save the rainforests in Peru and Ecuador.

The children managed to raise an impressive 6,200RMB from their bake sale. This adds on to the 7,597RMB they raised from their Fun Run back in Term 1. The children had a great time and learnt a lot and want to say a big thank you to all the other children, teachers and parents for supporting the event! Year 2 are looking forward to making even more money in the summer with their sponsored swim.

Year 4 Build the Great Wall of China

From our students in Year 4...

“We had to build a replica of the Great Wall of China. Each class built their own. Our Great Wall had to be made out of scrap paper and we only had 5 rolls of masking tape. Everyone did great and in the end our wall was AMAZING!! All classes made great walls. 4I made an artistic wall, 4U a very neat wall and 4S a very long wall. 4S was definitely the most messy” - Seonaid 4S

The challenge was to make everything out of paper. It was so much fun!” - Natasha 4S

“I found this quite difficult but also very amusing. When we all finished we took a picture, what a view that was!” - Gabriel 4S

All classes had a different style of doing it. We had lots of fun! We also had a great day!” - Joseph & Jagat 4U
