The students last year were involved with Students Responding to Students (SRS), a peer mentoring programme which pairs a migrant school student with an international school student and aims to foster leadership, empowerment and cross-cultural understanding.
They were so inspired by their experiences with SRS, that they applied for an ACAMIS Service Learning Grant and were awarded US$1,000 to allow them to continue their work with the Qingpu Xiu Long Migrant School this year and run an ECA programme there.
They are looking for volunteers to help them run their ECA and are hoping that as well as staff and students, parents would also like to get involved with this exciting new venture.
The ECA will be run in six week blocks, and they are looking for parents who can commit to helping on a Wednesday from 3:40pm – 5:40pm for a six week period.
Each six week block will have a different theme, listed below. If you are interested in volunteering and helping the students with this ECA, please email Ms Ling Coong and let her know which themed block you would be interested in helping with.
- Arts & Crafts
- Music
- Language Exchange
- Science club
- Gardening / ECO club
- Sports & Games / Drama
We were very pleased to have been able to help SRS this summer too, by hosting their summer camp for local migrant students.
Sarah, one of the organisers said: "We are extremely grateful for the BISS Puxi partnership. Our 40+ volunteers all loved and were challenged by the experience. Some of the parents told us that they've never seen their kids so happy!! And at the closing ceremony, many of the parents, children and volunteers were tearing up - I guess that was a good sign that they've had a fantastic week!!"
You can watch a video from their summer camp to get an idea of the fun they had.
