Our Principal Writes: Welcome Back

09 January 2015

A Happy New Year to you all from the staff at BISS Puxi. I hope that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas holiday and that you are ready for the New Year and the new term.

We are very pleased to be welcoming lots of new families to our school this term with around 120 new students joining the community during the course of the month of January. I know you will all be proactive in providing the new members of our community with a warm welcome as they settle in over the next couple of months.

I have some important news to share with you regarding the school’s senior leadership and staff recruitment. Firstly I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Niki Meehan as our new Vice Principal to replace Stuart White with effect from 1 August 2015. Niki is a hugely experienced school leader who has made a significant impact since she joined our team and I am looking forward to working with her and taking the school on to its next chapter of success. I am also delighted to inform you that replacing Mrs Jane White as Head of the IB Academy next year will be Mr Andy Joy, who many of you will remember was very successful in leading the IB Academy at BISS Puxi between 2009 and 2013. Andy and his family have spent two exciting years in West Africa where they have been involved in the foundation of a school, but they are now very happy to be returning to Shanghai. Mr Joy is very much looking forward to building on the great success of our IB Academy which he and Mrs White have played such an important part in creating.

I also need to share with you that sadly Mr Chris Share will be moving on at the end of the year for personal reasons. He and his family will be relocating closer to home in Europe and we hope and expect that he will take up a similar role in another Nord Anglia school. I will update you all in due course.

This, of course, creates opportunities for other talented and experienced leaders both within our own existing senior leadership team and from amongst the leadership teams of the other 30 Nord Anglia schools to apply for the now vacant Heads of Primary and Secondary posts. Having already done a good deal of work in searching for a new Vice Principal we have a number of good candidates who we will be interviewing here in Shanghai next week and in London the week after. I will be updating you all as appointments are made over the next few weeks.

We also have a couple of teaching staff who have joined or re-joined us. Katie Riordan (Year 1 class teacher) joins our team in Key Stage 1 as a class teacher. She is a very well qualified and highly skilled primary practitioner who joined our community with her family in August. She has already done some supply work for us and is therefore a familiar face.

Another familiar member of staff Lewis Cressey (Maths) returns to BISS Puxi having already completed a two year contract with us in the summer of 2014 before taking a one term sabbatical. He replaces Mrs Yamuna who has relocated with her family to Australia.

I am also pleased to be able to report that we have secured a number of other excellent new members of staff for next year from some very strong fields of applicants keen to join our team. Our staff turnover for 2013-14 remains pleasingly low by international standards at around 16-17%. We  will be sharing some information about these new staff shortly via the website and Mr White and I will be returning to the UK the week after next to continue the staff recruitment process.

Very best wishes for 2015.

- Kevin Foyle, Principal
