Guzheng , Gollings and Ontbijt – A Busy Weekend at BISS Puxi

22 October 2015

Not a week passes at BISS Puxi without a plethora of excitement and the last few days have been no exception.

  • Volleyball Team

Our volleyball team returned from Xiamen at the weekend with their first ever trophy – a testimony to the style of play that has been adopted by the students throughout the season.  We will continue to strengthen in this area.  At the same time as the Shanghai Masters was being played out across the city, our tennis team was in action too at the weekend. Our foursome enjoyed success on a warm and sunny day with matches against teams from around the Shanghai area.  Our SISAC Girls volleyball team travelled over to SAS Puxi for their last games in a season finale.  There were many personal bests too as over sixty of our swimmers competed at the SCIS Swim League Invitational.  Inside the school, over fifty of our musicians performed in the soloist recitals in Stage One.  It was delightful to listen to singers, pianists, cellists, guitarists, drummers, violinists and a guzheng player – spell-binding for the audiences.  All were polished in their performances and appreciated by parents and staff alike.

The school is at the heart of the community and the campus is rarely quiet.  Early on Saturday morning I met with some very excited Dutch students having their breakfast in the grassy quad area of the secondary school – which had been temporarily converted into a camp site – and some tired looking parents and staff – the event was to mark the start of the Dutch School book week

Arriving on Sunday morning, it was truly heartening to see just how busy the place was – the Puxi Bandits were drawing lots of support from parents, cheering on our younger rugby players on as they drove themselves forward into action!  Even Ben Gollings, the former England Sevens captain and present record holder for the most points scored in International Sevens Competitions came along, cheering the teams on.  It was great to witness our senior rugby players coaching and supporting the younger team.

I’d like to thank you for encouraging your children to take part in all of the ECA programmes on offer at the school.  I often see parents late in the evening supporting their children at the coaching sessions for sport.   But finally, the praise should go to the pupils.  They are tireless in their approach and they clearly recognise the value of practising techniques in rehearsals or training.  These students are committed to both their ECAs and their academic studies and I commend them on their achievements. Our pupils are truly the embodiment of ‘Growth Mindset’, they are ambitious, they work hard and they achieve great things.
