It’s All About Teamwork At BISS Puxi

12 November 2015

‘Exciting Experiences’ is one of our key promises at BISS Puxi and we have seen this throughout the secondary school this week.

  • Student Performance

One of the best aspects of being a member of the school community here is being able to see the students share these experiences through their various successes.

Our FOBISIA U15 students returned from Hong Kong with at least a medal each and a total of 140 – one of the most successful teams that the school has seen.  I congratulate them all and reflect upon the many hours of practice that they have put in together, supporting each other through training, pre-match tournaments and even injuries.  This is all carried out with a positive outlook, reinforced by the staff and parents who have been involved throughout this term in swimming, athletics, football and basketball preparation. A full report on the games will be in next week’s newsletter.

Tuesday evening also saw fabulous performances by our Drama students, who have now completed one element of their examination coursework.  Our Year 11 students treated us to scenes from ‘Blue Remembered Hills’, written by Dennis Potter and set in the West Country, England in 1943.  Year 13 students wrote their own script, a collaborative piece based upon the style of Brechtian Theatre and the story of Anthony and Cleopatra. Teamwork in writing, teamwork in rehearsal and teamwork in execution; the performances were very much appreciated by parents, students and staff.

In their year group assembly this week, 9I produced a thought-provoking presentation on ‘Day of the Dead’, after collaborating together for the past weeks with their form tutor, Miss Chadderton. This was also a team effort in which they showed real creativity, using masks, showcasing a dance performance and explaining to an enthralled audience the meaning behind this Mexican holiday – well done for such an outstanding effort!

The success of so many of our students is down to the efforts that they make together. On Friday, a teacher training day, our staff will be working in their subject teams on embedding ‘Deeper Learning’ into their curricula. One aspect of this framework is the competency of collaboration, where students cooperate to identify and create solutions to academic, social and personal challenges. We will be looking at developing more ways of providing these challenges in the classroom as this team approach is an essential skill that will equip our children for future jobs and civic life.
