Last week in the Music department…..

  • Andrea Lee Visit

Year 7: Last week, Year 7 were exploring theme and variations. They were looking at ways to alter pitch, rhythm, timbre and texture to create slightly different versions of an original theme. Themes included ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Frere Jacques’ which pupils enjoyed playing and singing together. Next, pupils were given a specific element to create a variation on and the rest of the class tried to guess which element had been changed.

Year 8: Having just finished a topic about Samba, Year 8 were looking forward to starting something new. They were delighted to learn that they will be studying African Drumming. This involves using djembe drums to produce cyclic and syncopated rhythms. The pupils worked in small groups to created performances which they shared with the class.

Year 9: Year 9 have been learning about the roles and functions of the different instruments within a jazz quartet. They have learnt to play the different parts of Blue Monk and soon will be working in bands to create an authentic performance of the piece. Pupils learnt about the way a blues piece of structured as well as exploring some of the technical terminology associated with blues genre music.

Andrea Lee from The Juilliard School of course, visited our school last week which generated huge interest amongst students, parents and media outlets in Shanghai.

A full report on Andrea’s visit will be available on the blog/newsletter later this week.
