Year 11 Prepare for Upcoming Paper 4 Exam

02 November 2015

On Wednesday 28 October, the sun was shining as fifty eight Year 11 Geography students travelled into central Shanghai to conduct an urban field studies investigation into the sphere of influence of two locations.

  • Geography Field Trip
  • Geography Field Trip

The purpose of the day was to provide students with a contrasting fieldwork experience to the Year 10 rivers trip, in order to thoroughly prepare them for the Human Geography section of the paper 4 exam.

Our first site was Changfeng Park, near the East China Normal University. Dodging scores of Shanghainese primary children who were there for a cross schools event, students carried out 6 data collecting exercises, including bi-polar analyses, traffic and pedestrian counts, land use surveys, service provision effectiveness analysis and questionnaires. Their willingness to practice their Mandarin skills when conducting questionaries’ meant they were met with smiles and patience from their interviewees.

During the second part of the day, students found themselves in more familiar surroundings at the Fashion Park Mall close to BISS Puxi. Students worked hard to collect accurate data and we arrived back at school with enough time to evaluate the quality of the investigations.

Students will follow up the day’s work in their upcoming Geography lessons, practising their data presentation and analysis skills and drawing justified conclusions from their findings which are exactly the skills that they need to demonstrate in paper 4.

Overall the day was a great success with students demonstrating the qualities that set our students apart. My thanks to the students for their effort and enthusiasm and to the accompanying staff, Mr Grocott, Ms Townsend and Ms James for helping to make the day so beneficial to the students.
