Music Department in Review 23 November – 27 November

01 December 2015

Last week, the music department was incredibly busy due to the start of the festive season. We prepared for a variety of performances – KS2 Choir were performing at The Intercontinental Hotel, our KS3 students were busily rehearsing for their production, not to mention all the rock bands, choirs and even our parent community choir who had been getting ready to perform at the Christmas Fair! However, we have also been very productive during our music lessons.

  • Xmas Fair

Here’s a snapshot of the work that has been going on.

Year 1 have been extremely ambitious and have been creating their own keyboard compositions. Not only did they choose the notes they wanted to play, but they were all able to use the correct musical notation to write down their compositions. This has been a very productive term for Year 1 who have all made excellent progress with their keyboard skills.

Year 3 have been exploring Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in even more detail. This week we focussed on ostinato, and analysed the different ways in which Stravinsky changes his ostinato throughout the whole ballet as well as creating our ostinato.

Year 6 are coming to the end of their Planets topic. This week they started to put together ideas for their final composition. They are using all the skills that they have learnt over the last term and combining them into their own Planet piece of music, thinking about texture, dynamics, tempo and structure.

Year 7 are also preparing for their end of term project. They have been studying ‘The Soloist’ – one of the core categories from the Juilliard Creative Classroom and will each be performing a solo next week in front of the whole class. Alongside this, they are writing a written comparison of 2 recordings of their piece, where they will be discussing similarities and differences as well as different musical elements.
