Our Students Inspired – A Nepal Fundraising Update

21 May 2015

As I write this, I can hear Beethoven soothingly floating through the warm air from the school quad at break time. Our students have been allowed to request songs to play during break and lunch in return for a donation to the Nepal Emergency fund. This is one of many innovative fundraising activities from the students this week.

At a time of year when naturally students are focussing on their upcoming exams and following that, the exciting experiences they will have during activities week, the CAS trip to Cambodia and the Year 10 work experience placements, it has been truly heart-warming to see how they have pulled together to raise funds for Nepal.

As a school, having our students leading and taking part in this kind of activity is vital. As a high performing school we teach our students the values they need to be successful, you will know this as our Education for Character philosophy. The fundraising our students are doing for Nepal is demonstrating these values at work. Raising awareness of Nepal falls under the first and most obvious value we expect of our students and that is for them to have an enquiring mind and find out about the world around them. The Nepal campaign is a great way to engage individual students in current affairs both locally and internationally. It is still a surprise when we live in this information rich age, to have had children across the year groups who did not know about what was going on in Nepal in the days after the first earthquake. Please do encourage your child to watch the news or read online news sources and talk with them about things that are going on in Shanghai, China and internationally. The act of fundraising itself has raised awareness of the location and geology of Nepal amongst our students thanks to our Key Stage 3 Geography teachers putting together a lesson on how this disaster happened.

The response from our school community has been marvellous.  The second education for character value of collaborating and sharing has shone though. The school and its exam preparations continue as normal, but the students have rallied together and we have come up with some truly creative and enterprising ideas this week that range from sponsored film watching, raising money for Monsieur Valente to shave his head, a sponsored swim and a Year 7 school perimeter relay marathon, to a form group in Year 8 in which the girls will be dressing the boys (appropriately) and our Year 12s running a clothes donation drive. All this is alongside the school wide initiatives of bake sales, selling Support Nepal badges and wristbands and building a ‘coin mountain’.

This is just a flavour of the many activities the students have embraced. Our students are again showing that they have the spirit of caring about society and other people.  They have an ambition to be the best they can be and by building up these values we want our students to have integrity and the drive to help themselves and others that will last for life.

We will update you next week on where the funds are donated to in Nepal. Have a great weekend.
