All of this rapid development does of course carry with it some disadvantages one of which is the traffic. Every day thousands of additional cars appear on the roads of Shanghai and therefore in spite of huge investment in road infrastructure traffic congestion is a blight on our lives causing delays and frustration.
We have our own traffic management challenge at drop off and pick up time. Our job is to manage the safe arrival and departure of 1470 students, over 200 staff as well as a few hundred parents and carers. They arrive on our fleet of buses, in private cars, on bicycles, motor bikes, tuk-tuks and on foot. All of this traffic arrives along two main roads and most of it during two short periods of time between 0810 and 0830 in the morning and in the afternoons between 3.30 and 3.50.
We have, as you know, devised a simple traffic management system to help facilitate this and thanks to the cooperation of the vast majority of the people involved it works very well and we can all travel in and out of school safely. The key element is the control of traffic at the junction of Baole Rd and Jinguang Rd where all of the traffic passes on its way to and from school and in particular the area that we have set aside for the picking up and dropping off of students in private cars.
The rules of use in this area are very simple and are designed to avoid traffic jams and to give parents and students an area where they can safely move from parked cars to the pedestrians’ path. Unfortunately a very small but significant minority ignore these rules and insist on waiting or even parking in this restricted area thus endangering the well-being of the people they are transporting as well as other members of the community. Please help us to keep this area clear and follow the rules and only move in and out of this area to pick up when the passengers are ready to be picked up. If there is any doubt about how this system works please click on this link.
On a different note thank you to everybody who has already ordered and picked up their new smart ID cards. Once again this new system is designed to improve security on our campus and we need your support in the use of this system. If you do not know what you need to do to get your card please follow this link.
Finally this week a reminder about one of the social highlights of the year The PTA Welcome Back Party which takes place on Saturday 19th September 2015 starting at 1800. It is a great evening for all of the family with music from Studio 188 and the chance to meet lots of new people and renew old acquaintances.
I look forward to seeing you there.
