The Value of an International Education

20 October 2016

International education has many benefits for our children; I only have to look in classrooms and playgrounds to be able to marvel at the unique and special experiences and opportunities that the children have here at BISS Puxi.

There is nothing more pleasing than to see children from different countries, and indeed continents, learning and playing together.  They are united by speaking in English, a language they have in common irrespective of their mother tongue.  And this gives them the opportunity to share and understand the diversity of the world and grow respect for other cultures.  Wonderful!

One of the challenges of the international school can be to provide an education that unites children from different countries and meets the expectations of parents of different nationalities.  We know from experience that the British system, which has been highly regarded for many years, allows us to do this very successfully.  We know that our approach to educating children in year groups according to their age allows them to mix and progress with children at a similar stage of social development.  This supports their confidence and self-esteem.  However, we also know that our approach to providing a personalised approach to each child’s learning is essential to meeting their learning needs. In some school systems the curriculum leads the learning and children have to be taught according to a rigid national scheme of work irrespective of their ability and learning style. At BISS Puxi our approach is based on a child centred model.  Assessments take place as an integral part of teaching to check what individual children know already, then their next steps can be planned for individually.  This approach means that the children feel secure, supported, but most importantly challenged in their learning.  Of course our experienced teachers also are aware of the standards that are expected to be achieved in each year group and we constantly have expectations that our children will exceed – and they do.

Our success in BISS Puxi is recognised by many, but most importantly by our families who move on to other schools usually in other countries.  Many parents keep in touch and will tell us of how they can struggle to find schools that meet the high quality of education and positive school ethos that their children enjoyed here in Shanghai.  And that is a pleasing testament to the success of, not only the personalised approach of the British system, but also of the whole unique school experience we offer at BISS Puxi.
