Waking up before dawn meant they were able to view the spectacular sunrise that had to be seen to be believed. The team quickly got into their warm up exercises and took part in a parade around the pool to get the meet started. The first swimmer for the BISS Lions on the day was Eddie Chan who was swimming in the 200-meter freestyle. The day quickly progressed with personal bests from all age groups and prelims turning into finals. The day ended and was well led by team captains Daniel Tafelski and Margot Jacobs who helped the nervous swimmers reach their best potential.
This highly competitive meet showed the hard work that the BISS Lions swim team have put in all year training. Highlights of the meet included a silver place for the 15&0 women in the 4X100 freestyle relay with the men placing third. This lead to the third most points won for the 15&O category. Jason Chang worked his way to the finals and won the silver medal in the 200-meter back. Furthermore the Lions achieved an outstanding result of 43 swimmers going into the finals and placing into the top 8.
Joint team captain Daniel Tafelski shares his thoughts on the meet below.
We have just arrived in Shanghai after a very successful meet, with most of us already missing the sun and warmth of Phuket.
Congratulations to all swimmers that took part in the FOBISIA swim meet and did their absolute best these past few days! They have every reason to be extremely proud of their spectacular achievements, scoring points and winning races whilst being in the unfamiliar environment of a 50m pool, racing Olympic standard athletes and having to brave the constant heat and sun. This year’s meet has been one of the most successful swim meets that BISS Lions has undertaken with such a small team, and although we didn't get into the top 3 schools, each of us did very well in their respective age groups.
New friends were made, new events were swum and altogether new experiences were created. Lastly, a special thanks to the parents and coaches for always being there for the swimmers, reminding us to stay hydrated, which races we had next and giving us their complete support!
Daniel Tafelski
I would like to echo Daniel’s thoughts and already, I’m looking forward to the next swimming tournament where BISS Lions will compete in.
