Nanjing Swimming Competition

17 January 2017

A very big round of applause for all the swimmers who took part in this weekend's Nanjing swimming competition! Being one of the smallest schools, there was only a small group of swimmers but it has been amazing to see the impact our team has been able to have on all the events.

  • Swimmers in Nanjing

From relay teams completely smashing school records to personal bests being achieved, almost every time a BISS swimmer entered the water, they showed their dedication as a swimmer. For many, it's as much a race against the clock as it is against the other swimmers in the heat, so I'm glad to say that the swimmers who competed at the event were able to draw on their training and shave off those few seconds with excellent turns, flawless relay transitions and outstanding finishes.

Even though we've had to swim against much bigger and more experienced teams, we've done an admirable job at being a formidable force to be reckoned with. What amazes me during every single competition is not just the determination shared by all swimmers when it comes to racing, but also the level of enthusiasm and spirit everyone shows. Well done!

As this will most likely be my last swimming competition, I would very much like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made the team what it is today, and everyone who has helped and supported me on my journey as captain and my career in swimming. A huge amount of appreciation goes to one of the most enthusiastic and passionate coaches out there, Ms Yardy. Thank you for putting so much effort into the team and wholeheartedly supporting us, fighting for us and struggling with us. Thank you for being there in the earliest hours in the morning and staying until late in the evening; it's magnificent to have such an experienced and caring coach there to lead us.

I'd also like to thank the main supporters of the swimmers: the parents. In particular my appreciation and respect goes to the parents representative, Annie Sun, my mom, for representing the wishes of all the parents, communicating with the school and spending so much time creating records and coordinating swimmers. Having such an eager group of parents encouraging us swimmers is incredible.

Mr Kelly and Mr Hitchings have also played a huge role in both the swim team's and my own success, and I'd just like to thank them for always being there to support our cause and taking time to help us out whenever possible. I am truly thankful to have them be there during races to support the whole team, during training sessions or simply congratulating us after a competition.

Lastly, to thank those who have been my team mates and friends for many years: the swimmers. I've hardly ever seen a more willing and able set of people. It's difficult to take the hard work and perseverance in training into a racing environment; but you've all managed to do so perfectly! I'm extremely proud of you all and thankful to have had you by my side. A big shoutout goes to Vice Captain Jason Chang, a very keen swimmer and someone who will never turn down an opportunity to race; I know the team will be in good hands! I'm very pleased to be able to round off my career as top swimmer of my age group, as well as with many hard-earned medals from other competitions that I will cherish forever.

It has been an honor to lead the BISS swim team, be its captain and win numerous medals in its name. I wish all of you the most wonderful and successful future! It's been an unforgettably marvelous journey that I will always treasure. Thank you!
