Best in Asia

Best in China, Best in Asia, Best in the World

This week’s Principals’ Commendations provided the opportunity to celebrate truly outstanding achievements by three of our senior students at The British International School Shanghai, Puxi.

Best in World

Our students performed exceptionally well in their IGCSE examinations in June at BISS. As a group, Year 11 achieved an impressive 60% at the highest grades. In the last week we have been contacted by Cambridge Examinations and Edexcel (the official examining bodies) to highlight the individual achievements of three pupils from BISS.

Firstly, huge congratulations to Hyunbin Ha, who took his examination in Year 10. Hyunbin achieved 100% in the exam and so we were delighted to have this recognised by EDEXCEL. Hyunbin has been awarded certificates for Best in China, Best in Asia and most significantly Best in The World for the 2019 IGCSE Mathematics. We discussed his performance at the presentation of his Principal’s Commendation and he really is a very modest and humble young man, who works hard and ensured each topic is understood fully. We asked his teacher, Ms Yadav, the secret to achieving such an award: “The students have to show all of their workings and to fully understand how each mark is achieved. Revision requires dedication but the rewards are worth it!”

Hyunbin has been awarded certificates for Best in China, Best in Asia and most significantly Best in The World for the 2019 IGCSE Mathematics.

Academic excellence is a pillar of our ‘Be Ambitious’ philosophy at the school and this is reflected in our students’ achievements in Mathematics. Preparation is already well underway with a Year 10 class of January entrants and we can’t help thinking that with Ms Yadav’s support, the students are heading for another year of excellent grades. Our students in Mathematics are themselves ambitious and work very hard, with many attending extra revision sessions. These are run not only by our dedicated teachers, but also IB students who tutor voluntarily for us. Ms Yadav was the class teacher for the January entry students and she put their success down to careful revision. Students start revising more than six months before the exam and whilst they are still finishing learning the syllabus. She encourages students to revise in ECA time or lunchtime to help them achieve a full understanding of even the most complex topics. Students find the first exam very nerve-racking so they can complete additional optional tasks to feel completely ready for the challenge. Well done to Hyunbin and all of our other Mathematicians for their excellent results.

Best in China

We also celebrate the achievements of Enzio Santana Nieto Barreiro and Jip Melle Verkoulen who have received recognition from Cambridge Examinations in Dutch Language and Literature. Both Enzio and Jip have been been awarded certificates for ‘High Achievement’ in First Language Dutch IGCSE. This recognises those who have achieved outstanding results in subjects which are not so widely taken and yet have achieved the highest marks in the country. They’ve been invited, along with their families to Cambridge International Learners Award Ceremony to celebrate their success on Monday at the Shanghai Marriott Hotel Hongqiao.
