The Charity Committee

The Charity Committee is probably one of the longest running ECA’s in school, a place where people can help with the community and IB students can take part to contribute to their CAS programmes. Here is a recap of what we did this term.

We made our start at the Welcome Back Carnival , where we ran a multitude of stalls to raise money for The Giving Tree. From Mocktail bars to face painting to game booths. You name it, we did it. Our first major project was The Giving Tree, where we ask volunteers to donate books and a skipping rope to less fortunate children so they will have a present during Christmas. At first, we didn’t get enough donations and estimated that we couldn’t reach our quota in time, but once again our members surprised us. They went on social media and ran around to each of the classrooms so everyone knew about The Giving Tree. Through their hard work, we managed to meet the quota just in time. During November, we held a fundraiser for UNICEF. For the fundraiser, we opened up a dessert and bubble milk tea stand. We asked parents to donate cakes while our club members made the bubble milk tea by hand. It was a huge success and we raised more than 7000 RMB.

Now that the Christmas season has finally started, the Charity Committee is eager to share what preparations went into preparing the Christmas Fair. We started working on the Christmas fair straight after The Giving Tree, and I still remember how big of a mess it was at the start, with the flower shops unable to wrap the raffle prizes and having way too many uniform donations. But that was all fixed with some great volunteers working after school to finish the additional workload. We had a few main stalls: Mocktails & drinks, a second hand book and toy stall, a secondhand uniform stall, face painting, bake sale, Christmas wrapping service and an arts and crafts stall where children can write a letter to Santa. Year 12 students had been working on preparing different games as part of their CAS project and to raise money for Indochina Starfish Foundation. When the long-awaited day finally arrived, the weather forecast did not affect our motivation to provide the best experience for everyone who was going to participate in the Christmas Fair. For that I would like to thank everyone who helped with the fair. The parents who organised the fair, our school marketing team, the IB students, the teachers who volunteered to get sponged even in this cold weather. We had great entertainment from the Junior Ballerinas, the BISSVOXIS Choir and bands. Overall, there were some roadblocks, but with everyone’s help, we managed to pull it off.
