A message to the school community from Karen Carrington at Heart to Heart
"The BISS Puxi semester end donation has already been put to a great use. Your two sponsored children - Dai Xinyi (H2H Child #1671) and Qiu Shiwen (H2H Child #1672) - have successfully completed the open heart surgeries they needed. Here are their stories:
Dai Xinyi is a 3 month old girl from Anhui province. She was treated in the First People's Hospital of Hefei for pneumonia when she was a few days old. When she was examined, the doctor found that her heart had a problem. They tested her further and found that she had CHD. Surgery was required, but the family couldn't pay for it. They took her home. There are 5 people in the family - grandparents, parents and Dai Xinyi. The grandparents are farmers. They are not in good health and require medication. They farm the best they can. The mother looks after Dai Xinyi. The father works as a waiter in a hotel in their town. Altogether, the family makes around 25,000 per year. They currently owe more than 60,000 yuan. They couldn't get a loan for the surgery that Dai Xinyi required.
Qiu Shiwen is a 9 year old boy from Jiangsu province. His mother and sister both suffer from congenital heart disease. In early April 2020, his sister had a successful heart operation in Shanghai Yuanda Hospital. His mother had her TOF operation in 2011 at a hospital in Jiangsu province. It failed and she has not yet been able to afford to have another - they want to look after the children first. In early May, his parents took Qiu Shiwen to Huai'an People's Hospital to check his heart since they were worried about his health. He he was diagnosed with multiple ASD defects. Surgery was recommended, but the family can't afford it - especially after going through the sister's surgery this spring. There are 4 members in the family - the parents, the 7 year old sister and Qiu Shiwen. The father is a rebar worker on construction sites. The family couldn't get a loan to pay for Qiu Shiwen's surgery.
The BISS Puxi donation enabled both of the children to get the surgeries they required. Dai Xinyi had her surgery on May 28 and Qiu Shiyuan on May 29. They were both on the critical list until this morning, but have now been moved to the Recovery Unit since they are doing so much better. They should be ready for visitors by tomorrow. If you and/or others from BISS Puxi would like to come see them and/or have a video call with them, please let me know. I should be able to arrange it most times between 10-5 Mondays through Saturdays. I know they would love to be able to meet you!
Thank you for helping both these children!"
