European Languages

We have programmes to allow students to learn a range of European languages from an early age. Starting in Key Stage 2, aged 7, children can opt to study French or Spanish. We also offer native French and Spanish as after school clubs and native German on curriculum.

In Key Stage 2, children aged between 7 and 11 can choose to study French or Spanish as an additional language for two lessons each week, as well as continuing with their study of Chinese. They are taught by subject specialists, and have the chance to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Once they join the Secondary School, students continue to study the European language they studied in Primary School or opt to do German. They will study these alongside Chinese until they make IGCSE examination choices aged 14. They then have the option to study a language at IGCSE, taking a formal examination aged 16.

We offer an extensive range of non-native language options as part of our IB Diploma Programme, and this includes French, German and Spanish at a range of levels. Students sometimes continue to study a language to a higher level, or sometimes choose to broaden their programme by choosing to start a new language as part of the International Baccalaureate's Ab initio (beginners) programme. We currently offer Spanish Ab Initio. We help advise with all of this.

Students may also wish to continue their native European language in the International Diploma Programme, finishing with a bilingual IB Diploma.
