Week Beginning 18 September 2017


  • Thank you to so many of you who have ensured your child’s belongings are clearly named please can you check that all water bottles and snack boxes are named every day.
  • Swimming lessons : remember to send swimming costume, towel, goggles and swim hat each Friday.
  • Please remember we are a nut free school, this means you may not send any nut products at all to school at any time, this includes Nutella, snack bars that contain nuts, nut butters, nut oils or nuts.
  • For the safety of all the children, please ensure the small gate is closed as you come in and out every morning.  This is the indoor gate in the corridor as you approach the pre-nursery area.
  • All of the children have at least one Tapestry post now. We value your feedback on the posts and please do remember that this is an opportunity for us to share knowledge children as individuals. Please do add your own observations and photos of children’s learning at home. 
  • Registration for the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) is now open to adults and students. The HSK test will be held on Saturday 11 November 2017. Please see the attached registration form for information. Full documentation and payment for HSK test must be received by Monday 9 October 2017.


The Fox Cubs and Panther Cubs classes have both continued to be interested in birthdays, wrapping presents and making pretend birthday cakes this week. The children have been using the play dough and sand to make birthday cakes and also singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to each other. Next week we are going to continue with this line of interest. On Monday the children will receive a letter from the Fox and Panther class mascots explaining that their birthdays are coming up. (Please keep this a secret until after Monday, so it will be a surprise for the children!)

We will be getting ready for their birthday by making birthday hats, decorations and cards. The children will be able to practise mark making their name in the card they make. We will also make a birthday cake ready for the birthday party (Monday 25th September).

The children have also been interested in babies and doctors, so we will let the children explore this interest by providing bandages and other medical toys for them to use in their play.

The children will be making birthday hats and decorations for the birthday party. The children will be focussing on using Mandarin words for the different colours that they use for their decorations and hats. Also they will be talking about their favourite colours.

Children have been fascinated by the opportunities on offer this week including using dye to change the colour of flowers, mixing ingredients together and making gloop. The experiment with flowers has stimulated children’s interest in flowers and growing which will be followed up next week as we do some real growing. The children are using the language from ‘Winnie the Witch’ in their play throughout the day and this has extended their story telling skills. We will be introducing the story of ‘Winnie in the Winter’ and introducing language such as ‘cold’ and ‘freezing’ through investigations into ice and melting. As part of our focus on change we will be making bubbles and introducing poems to extend language and literacy skills. Following the idea of change, we will also use the story ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ to investigate change in animals and make links between the two interest groups.


Some children have continued their interest in animals. We have been exploring different habitats and settings, sorting animals that live in the sea, on land and in the sky. We have been encouraging pupils’ vocabulary in this area, using language to describe the characteristics of each animal. The outdoors has also inspired our learning, finding some beautiful mini-beasts and prompting lots of curiosity. We are linking their interests to a variety of stories and songs and pupils have enjoyed learning and peforming songs such as ‘Walking in the Jungle’ and ‘Let’s go to the Zoo’ . We hope to make puppets to allow us to perform the song as one of our activitites. Next week we are hoping to look more closely at some of the animals of interest including butterflies, spiders and sea creatures using different areas within the Learning Environment to support the learning. We aim to explore the food that animals would eat too. We also hope to use the story ‘Handa’s surprise’. It would be really helpful if you could send photographs of pets that pupils have at home in for the children to share with their friends and prompt further discussion.

Children loved to talk about animals for the past week. They showed more intrests of what do animals eat? So next week we will show them the ‘Handa’s Surprise’ story.  And some children love to put animals into the water so we will discuss with them which are the sea animals and talk about the water, deep or shallow linked to the story ‘Little Pony Across the River’.

Naar aanleiding van het thema van de komende kinderboekenweek  `Griezelen` lezen we deze week het boek `Bang Mannetje` .   Bang Mannetje is bang voor  van alles:  van voordringen bij de bakker, van het dragen van een bloemetjesbroek en van rare geluiden in de nacht.  Hij maakt een afspraak met de Toverboom die bange mannetjes van hun angst afhelpt....  Waar ben jij bang voor?  Wat doe je als je bang bent?  We verwoorden onze kleine en grote angsten en hangen ze op in de toverboom.

De kinderen van Nursery brengen elke dinsdag een bezoekje aan de schoolbibliotheek.  Gelieve het biebboek weer  tijdig mee te geven zodat uw kind elke week een nieuw boek kan uitkiezen.  Hartelijk dank voor uw hulp hierbij.
