Week Beginning 25 September 2017


  • Thank you to so many of you who have ensured your child’s belongings are clearly named. Please can you check that all water bottles and snack boxes are named every day.
  • Swimming lessons : remember to send swimming costume, towel, goggles and swim hat each Friday.
  • Please remember we are a nut free school, this means you may not send any nut products at all to school at any time, this includes Nutella, snack bars that contain nuts, nut butters, nut oils or nuts.
  • For the safety of all the children, please ensure the small gate is closed as you come in and out every morning.  This is the indoor gate in the corridor as you approach the Pre-Nursery area.
  • All of the children have at least one Tapestry post now. We value your feedback on the posts and please do remember that this is an opportunity for us to share knowledge children as individuals. Please do add your own observations and photos of children’s learning at home. 
  • Registration for the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) is now open to adults and students. The HSK test will be held on Saturday 11 November 2017. Please see the attached registration form for information. Full documentation and payment for HSK test must be received by Monday 9 October 2017.
  • In Nursery, we are trying to promote the children’s independence. Please can you help at home by asking your child to put on their own socks and shoes.
  • We are looking for parents who are able to volunteer their time to help with our Early Years Library. This would include keeping the books in order, scanning books in and out, reading to children, demonstrating book care and making the book area looking inviting. Please email Liz Peacock ( if you would like to volunteer.


The children in both classes have loved preparing for their class mascot’s birthday party. Hats have been made, cards have been written and the children are very excited for the big day on Monday. The children can bring in their own teddy to join in with the party celebrations. After the birthday party, we will ask the children to consider other celebrations that they have been involved in and share this with their friends.

To develop this interest of celebrations we will share the story of the Moon Festival with the children. This will be done in both Mandarin and English so all children have an understanding of this celebration. To link in with this story the children will make their own rabbit at our arts and crafts area and we will also attempt to make moon cakes with the children. Any parents who can support us with this and also provide any of the equipment we require would be greatly appreciated- please let us know!

In the Meerkats’ classroom this week the children have had a great time exploring colours and colour mixing. Many of the children in our Unit can now name primary colours in both English and Mandarin. We have a display up of the children’s colour mixing trays that they made up in the classroom. This also has photos which show the children’s delight and high level of concentration when they took part in this experience. Please do come and have a look at drop off and pick up time.

There has also been a huge interest in bubbles with all of the children working in the ourtdoor area. The investigations into how we can make bubbles have included blowing, sponging, whisking, stirring and mixing. We will be extending on this next week by using the bubble mashine and talking about how and why bubbles happen as well as continuing with our bubble poems from last week.

We had planned to make cloured ice and do ice melting after reading ‘Winnie in the Winter’ and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’. With colour mixing having such a high level of interest from the children we ran out of time so this will be included in our planned focus experiences for next week.

As so many of the children have been interested in the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ throughout the unit Ms Hastings, will be working with all of the children to extend and develop their story telling skills by introducing ‘Story Stones’. Ms Hastings has had extensive recent training in developing language skills through the use of this technique.

Some children have continued their interest in animals. We have been exploring different habitats and settings, sorting animals that live in the sea, on land and in the sky. We have been encouraging pupils’ vocabulary in this area, using language to describe the characteristics of each animal. The outdoors has also inspired our learning, finding some beautiful mini-beasts and prompting lots of curiosity. We are linking their interests to a variety of stories and songs and pupils have enjoyed learning and peforming songs such as ‘Walking in the Jungle’ and ‘Let’s go to the Zoo’ . We hope to make puppets to allow us to perform the song as one of our activitites. Next week we are hoping to look more closely at some of the animals of interest including butterflies, spiders and sea creatures using different areas within the Learning Environment to support the learning. We aim to explore the food that animals would eat too. We also hope to use the story ‘Handa’s surprise’. It would be really helpful if you could send photographs of pets that pupils have at home in for the children to share with their friends and prompt further discussion.

To support our learning from reading the Hungry Caterpillar we will develop a days of the week and date chart. The children will also learn a song to support them in  learning to sequence the days of the week.

Theme: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Children really enjoyed the story about a little pony walk across the river in the Wolf class. They are using “shallow” and “deep” during their play and predict wheather this animal can walk across or not. Next week we will continue the big animal theme while extends to the little insects. We will talk about the little hungry caterpillar, the life cycle and counting numbers of the food. Children will make the ice lollies for the activities.

Deze week gaan we verder met onze opgave om net zoals Bang Mannetje  niet meer bang te zijn.  Wanneer Jules niet kan slapen ziet hij vreemde lichtjes buiten.  We praten over bang zijn in het donker en hoe we onze angst voor het duister kunnen overwinnen.  Misschien heb jij thuis wel een nachtlampje in je slaapkamer?  Of laat mama het licht aan in de gang?

De kinderen van Nursery brengen elke dinsdag een bezoekje aan de schoolbibliotheek.  Gelieve het biebboek weer  tijdig mee te geven zodat uw kind elke week een nieuw boek kan uitkiezen.  Hartelijk dank voor uw hulp hierbij.
