Week Beginning 27 February 2017

This week is a short week. We will finish on Thursday 2 March and will return to school on Wednesday 8 March. Enjoy the break.


  • Reminder- please encourage the children to keep their own toys at home as it can be upsetting when a toy is lost or broken at school.
  • Polite reminder  in case of illness see below for our school policy regarding keeping your child at home:

-Diarrhoea (2 or more episodes in 24h that is new or unusual): Stay home for 48 hours since the last episode.

-Vomiting (more than 2 times and/or occurring with fever): Stay home for 48 hours since the last episode of vomiting .

-Vomiting (1 isolated occurrence without fever): Stay home for 24 hours since vomiting

-Fever (temperature equal to or more than 37.6 degrees celsius): Stay home 24 hours after the pupil is found fever free without intake of fever lowering medication.


Our classroom themes have developed throughout the week and are still very popular! Pirates and spacemen are busy and always eager to extend their learning through play. From these interests children have started to look at different sea animals, particularly sharks, whales and dolphins. We will develop this further, creating an ‘under the sea’ small world play area and by writing a book about what lives under the water, using non-fiction books to support our research! Which is your favourite under water creature? Can you find a fact about it and email it to your teacher?

Writing for a purpose is a wonderful way to inspire children to mark make and read back their work. The children will create signs for our outdoor areas, the role play areas and even numbers for the working wall.

The number focus for the week will be combining two amounts, counting them altogether and careful counting to 20.

We will also play lots of turn taking games throughout the week. Board games, computer based games, memory games and games using balls in p.e and in the outdoor area.

The children are showing a lot of interest in numbers this week and have been ordering number cards and writing numbers independently. We will develop this interest with the children by taking them on a number walk where they can use digital cameras to take photos of numbers in their environment. You can also develop this at home by looking for numbers, e.g. page numbers in books, numbers on doors or road signs etc.

The children have been doing a great job of tracing and copying their names. We will extend this further with some children by focusing on the children writing the letters of their name in lowercase.

To further extend children’s turn-taking skills develop friendships we will play games with rules in large and small groups, including snap, fish, memory games.

As we have had a big focus on ‘The Little Red Hen’ and the children have seen it being acted out we will encourage the children to make their own books and take part in acting out familiar stories. We will read the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and look at the language of small, medium and big.

The children love the growing plants theme so we will do this one more week. To develop  their interest s we are going to talk about different  growing environments for different fruits and vegetables. For example apples are on the tree while the potatoes are under the soil. Children can look at the language of on, under, left , right.  To follow this theme they will make a sort  out game worksheet.
