Week Beginning 9 April 2018

  • Today we sent home the children’s winter clothing. Please remember to bring spare clothing after the holiday. In warmer weather we do a lot of water play so spare shoes are also needed. Thank you.
  • Very exciting news: we have now begun preparing the children for the transition to Reception. The children have been delighted to be eating lunch in the dining hall where the “big kids” eat. We have had a lot of positive feedback on how well the Nursery children behave during meal times.
  • After the break we have have an additional Nursery class opening. There will be ten children and a new Teacher. The new class will be the Walrus Cubs. Their teacher is Mrs. Emma Nolan.
  • The 22nd April 2018 is World Earth Day. At BISS Puxi we will be holding an earth week, commencing Monday 23rd April 2018. The week will begin with an ‘Air Aware Day’ including assemblies for children and talks for parents. In support of the WWF’s work in this field, pupils are being asked to attend school on Wednesday 25th April dressed as their adopted animal (Asian Elephant or Orangutan) and pay 20RMB which will be donated to the organisation in support of their work.

On the first Monday back, we will be discussing what the children did during the holiday. If they went to a different country or stayed in China, how did they travel to their holiday and who did they go with? Please talk to your child about their holidays and then they can share this with their classmates.

On Tuesday a parcel will arrive at school. Inside a large cardboard box there will be a colander, teddy bear, welly boots, picnic food and an owl. I wonder what these could be used for? We will discuss the children’s ideas about our mystery parcel. Just then we remember that there’s a story with these things in. We will read ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy about a bear who makes a rocket and visits the moon. Throughout the week we will be reading this story and sequencing the events.

The adult focused activity will be to make rocket pictures, using different shapes. Can the children name the shapes and identlfy the sides and corners?

We will change our role play area into a ‘Space Station’, thinking about the different things that we might see inside a rocket.

In maths we will be blasting off into space by counting down from 10 and finding the matching numbers. We will also be naming the shapes, sides and corners during the adult focused activity.

In phonics, we will be identifying the initial sound for different objects. We will then extend this by looking at the letters that make those sounds.

The children have enjoyed our celebrations for International week. Many of us are excited to be going places next week so we thought it would be a great idea to talk about holidays. We would love it if the children could bring back a post card of a place they travelled to during the break and a family holiday photo.

We will be setting up a travel agency in the role play or writing area. This will encourage play writing. The children will also be encouraged to draw a picture relating to their holiday. We will also be setting up forms of transport.

During our International week celebrations we began a collaborative project across the Nursery creating a large scale alphabet wall display. This prompted some great demonstrations from the children of their phonetic knowledge. This project will continue when we return to school as the children will be working with teachers to order the letters and put the frieze together.

The children have been having a great time outside with our loose materials. There have been great communal building projects happening. This work is extremely valuable for building problem solving skills and learning about shape and space.

Spot Goes On Holiday

We will review our Panda's traveling book and talk about where the children went on their holidays. It would be great if children can bring some photos or souvenirs to school so they can do show and tell.
