Week Beginning 1 May 2017

Please note that school will start on Tuesday 2 May this week due to the National Holiday.

  • As the weather is getting warmer please ensure your child is dressed appropriately and has their water bottle, sun hat etc.

This week in Literacy the children will be looking at the novel ‘Jemmy Button’ and exploring the story, along with how to use the first person. They will learn about ways of creating a story with a diary theme and look at the book and its description of a young person on an adventure as an explorer. The children will then plan their own adventure and explorer stories using ideas from the book and from the previous week when we studied tension and description. Using this knowledge, the story plan will be created considering what will make an effective plot for next week.

In Maths next week we will be revisiting time. The children will build their confidence with telling the time on a 12 and a 24 hour clock and discuss the vocabulary needed to do this. They will also develop their skills of analysing timetables in real life situations. They will look at flight times and train times and answer questions relating to these, developing their understanding of duration. They will also think about the calendar and how it is made up and look at converting units of time for instance seconds to minutes or days to weeks and months. The children will have an opportunity to find out how long they take to do certain tasks and time themselves, applying these skills of duration and conversion.

This week the students will design and make an item that every Explorer needs and relies upon – a survival bag! They will learn how to thread a needle and use the equipment safely before developing their stitching skills, with a focus on making small stitches in a straight line. The bags will have a drawstring and will be dyed once they are complete.

The exciting learning opportunity continues with teaching the children how to code using the App ‘Hopskotch’. This will continue throughout the term leading children to design and create their own games. This week we will be creating a game where an avatar avoids obstacles and learning how to degug our programmes to fix mistakes in the code.
