Week Beginning 7 November 2016

Date for the diary: Year 5 will be having their Themed Learning Show case on Wednesday 7 December from 8:50am – 9:40am. We would like to invite parents to join us in celebrating all of the hard work the children have done during their ‘Building A Village’ topic.


  • Please continue to support our Giving Tree bag sales to donate at the end of November. If you would like to buy any more, please take your money and reply slip to the uniform shop. If you need a letter, please contact your teacher and they will pass one on for you from the charity co-ordinator.
  • All this week children will be selling Lego brick accessories during break and lunch times. The price list is in children’s communication book and these sales will support our fundraising for Nepal.
  • Please remember next weekend is a long weekend, and school will be closed from Friday 11 to Tuesday 15 and will reopen on Wednesday 16 November.


In Literacy this week Year 5 will continue with the genre of instruction writing. Using the information gained from last week’s work the children will try to apply the different elements to their writing. The final piece entitled, ‘How to Build a Village’, will be produced using their iPads and the Book Creator app. Parents will have a chance to see their work during our Showcase event at the end of this term.

In Maths this week the children will be learning to apply their knowledge of number to solve a variety of word problems. The children will learn to read and understand the problem first and then check which operation to use in order to solve the problem. As the week continues the children will attempt more complex, multi-step problems that need to be broken down into parts.

‘Building a Village’

In Themed Learning the children will begin to look at services that are required in a settlement. The children will make a list of services required such as schools, nurseries, shops, supermarkets, doctors, dentists, hospitals, bus and train stations, banks, post offices, hairdressers, car parks etc. The children will learn that these are sometimes called amenities. The children will begin to distinguish which ones are essential and will look at how the size of a settlement effects the number of services required.

This week the children will continue to build on their knowledge of using variables in apps. An app to convert between kilometres and miles will be created using the correct code and an opportunity to discuss and deicde on its user friendliness will be had. In this unit the children will also learn to use variables in more complex ways, and to manipulate inputs to create useful outputs.

This week we will discuss Remembrence Day. The children will reflect on this important period in history and discuss why it is important to remember those who lost their lives in battle.

This week we are learning about different sports, preferences and clothing. The students are to recognise when to use play or do when referring to a particular sport. For homework students are to revise the vocabulary and sentence structures learned and will continue with their Duolingo online studies.

Next week we will present the weather forecast.  We will film ourselves, paying attention to the pronunciation and using the vocabulary we have  learned in class.           

This  week’s homework will be practising our weather forecast presentation.  You can use the presentation of the topic  ‘Meteo’in the Linguascope  app to rehearse the pronunciation of weather related vocabulary.

Die Schüler haben einen Lese- und Rechtschreibtest geschrieben und ihr individuelles Feedback bekommen. Anschlieβend haben wir eine Bilderkollage zum neuen Thema untersucht, nämlich wird es um Fledermäuse gehen. Im Rahmen des Themas werden die Kinder lernen, Sachinformationen aus den Texten zu entnehmen, sie zusammenzufassen und zu präsentieren.
Es gibt diese Woche keine Hausaufgabe, da die Schüler einen Test hatten.

De leerlingen werken verder aan hun toekomstprofiel. Wilt u weten wat uw zoon of dochter doet als hij of zij 80 is? Wip dan even langs in de Nederlandse klassen. Om naar onze klassenstamboom te kijken. De leerlingen verdiepen zich deze week ook in het stellen van open en gesloten vragen en ze bereiden een interview voor met opa of oma.

Graag ontvangen we van alle leerlingen familiefoto’s: papa, mama, broers en zussen, tante en ooms, neven en nichten en opa’s en oma’s. We maken een grote SDS-stamboom.
