Week Beginning 10 October 2016


  • Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform. In particular please ensure your child is wearing black shoes. Girls should wear plain white socks and boys should wear black or grey socks. You can review the school’s uniform policy at
  • Please remember to send in and label your child’s snack box and water bottle, as well as a hat during the hot weather.
  • If for any reason your child is unable to take part in PE, please send a signed message in your child’s communication book.  Your child still needs to bring in their PE kit to enable them to participate as a coach, an official or to give feedback.  


This week in Literacy we will be beginning an exciting series of lessons about debate. We shall be investigating a range of moral issues and learning the key skills required to maturely discuss them and express differing opinions. The first topic we shall be investigating is the topical issue of refugee movement around the globe. As part of our wider topic where we look at the affect of conflict on children, we shall investigate the current conflict in Syria and the wider issues surrounding the fighting.

In Maths, we will be beginning a unit of work on fractions. This will include calculating fractions of amounts, converting decimals and percentages into fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and using fractions in real life problems. We will also look at mental strategies to speed our claculations when considering fractions of amounts.

We will be continuing our World War 2 topic and building on the foundations of knowledge we have laid in the first weeks back. The children will be investigating the Blitz and discovering what life was like for children under the rain of bombs falling upon London during 1940. They will also be using a range of challenging techniques in Art to construct a multi-layered piece of printed work that depicts the destruction of war. This will be coupled with an investigative scheme of work using laptops and iPads to study how shelters were built to keep the population safe from falling bombs.

This week the children will use a new touch typing program and will continue to learn the coding language ‘Python’.

After the October Holiday we will look outside the window and talk about the weather.  We will look at a French weather forecast and practice weather related vocabulary, preparing ourselves to present our own French weather forecast the coming weeks!

After the holidays, we will be continuing to look at the verb, avoir. We will revise j’ai and learn tu as, il a, elle a and nous avons (parts of avoir) and use it with the negative. We will also enjoy a traditional story and revise how to pronounce the ‘ai’ phoneme correctly.

Reisbureau SDS: Reisverslag en Reisverhaal

Na het doen van onderzoek, het schrijven van de flyer en het reisprogramma en het verkopen van de reis op de reisbeurs verdiepen we ons de laatste twee weken van het thema Reisbureau SDS in de tekstgenres reisverslag en reisverhaal. We kijken naar de typische kenmerken van de teksten, naar overeenkomsten en verschillen en schrijven zelf een reisverhaal op basis van reisverslagen van de vakantie.

Optioneel huiswerk: de leerlingen schrijven per dag een kort verslagje (1 – 3 zinnen) over de vakantie. We gebruiken dit in de klas.

Bij spelling herhalen we deze week de volgende categorieën van Staal:

Groep 4: lange en korte klanken, luchtwoord, zingwoord, plankwoord

Groep 5: open en gesloten lettergrepen (vervolg introductie)

Groep 6: open en gesloten lettergrepen (verdieping), tropisch-woord, politie-woord

Groep 7: langermaakwoord (-b, -d), sterke werkwoorden in de verleden tijd, open en gesloten lettergrepen
