    Head of Global Languages

    Fiona McConnon

    Fiona McConnon graduated from University College London (UCL) with an honours degree in French and from York University with a PGCE in French and sport. She subsequently taught English at a University in Lanzhou with Voluntary Service Overseas for two years, where she became fascinated by Mandarin. This led to her spending five years mainly in Beijing as a British Council – Chinese government scholar at the Beijing Languages Institute, completing a Master's of Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

    Maria Pantasoulas

    Head of Secondary EAL

    Maria Pantasoulas

    Maria gained a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and then went on to obtain a Master's Degree in Education with a distinction from the University of Nottingham, where she also completed her PGCE. She has over fifteen years of experience teaching English both as a foreign and additional language. She joined BISS after teaching in international schools in Korea and elsewhere in China.

    Irene Garcia Moreno

    Irene studied French Philology and English Philology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and spent a year in Paris, studying language and literature at Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. During her studies, Irene started her training in values-based education while volunteering with a local children's organisation. She then completed a Master’s Degree in Secondary Teacher Training, specialising in Foreign Languages at the Universitat de Barcelona. She was clear in her goal of becoming a teacher; it had always been her vocation.

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Deputy Headteacher of Whole School and German Teacher

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Lisa studied German with International Studies at Warwick University from 1991-1995. She then took a year out and completed her CTEFLA certificate for EAL and taught children in EAL schools in Oxfordshire. She then found herself working in retail management for two years, but felt that her heart lay in teaching and so returned to Warwick to complete her PGCE.

    Laury Valente

    Laury studied Foreign Languages and Civilisations at the University of Avignon, France, before moving abroad to obtain a PGCE in Modern Languages at Liverpool John Moores University in 2006. He went on to hone his teaching skills in the city of Liverpool before moving on to Cairo, Egypt, where he taught in MES, one of the leading schools in the Middle East. He is a returning staff member as he was part of the MFL Department from 2013 to 2017.

    Natalia Wilson

    Natalia was born in Moscow, Russia, where at the age of eight she started to intensively learn foreign languages in a specialised language school. Her passion for languages led her to continue studying English, Spanish and Russian at the Translation and Interpretation Faculty of the Moscow State Linguistics University, where she achieved a First Class Honours Degree with specialisation in Linguistics and Intercultural Communications.

    Marina Lee

    Marina has a Bachelor of Commerce International Degree (Spanish) from University College Dublin. As part of her undergraduate degree she completed an Erasmus year abroad in Valencia, Spain. She continued her studies to become a secondary school teacher graduating from Trinity College Dublin with a First Class Honours in Teaching Practice. During her studies at Trinity College, she focused on the use of authentic texts in the MFL classroom.

    Alexander Cattell

    Alexander graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Modern Languages with distinction in spoken Spanish from the University of Exeter. After completing an MA in Spanish and Latin American Studies at King’s College, London, followed by a PhD in Spanish History at the University of Exeter, he undertook a PGCE in Modern Languages (Spanish and French) at the University of Cambridge.
