Maria gained a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and then went on to obtain a Master's Degree in Education with a distinction from the University of Nottingham, where she also completed her PGCE. She has over fifteen years of experience teaching English both as a foreign and additional language. She joined BISS after teaching in international schools in Korea and elsewhere in China.
Maria has been leading the EAL secondary department for the third consecutive year and has been an EAL teacher at BISS for the past eight years. As Centre Exam Manager she is responsible for the Cambridge Assessment exams that include the FCE, PET, KET and Young Learner Exams across both the Primary and Secondary Schools. The EAL department also prepares students for the IGCSE ESL exam in Year 11 and English B for the IBDP. A fostering environment of ethos and support is of utmost importance to Maria. She strives to engage and motivate her students to achieve their aspirations and assist them in developing the necessary skills in English to be successful academically, while emphasising students’ positive qualities and achievements. Maria works to gain her students’ respect and inspire trust, and is always available to listen and discuss their concerns, whether these may be academic, social or personal.
Maria enjoys running, reading and shopping. She also spends time in the kitchen cooking up Greek and other delights. Above all she enjoys spending time with her family.
