Dear Parents

It’s been a short but wonderful week. In last Friday’s assembly, I challenged the students to find ways of explaining the common links between northern European and Vietnamese fairy tales. I wanted to share with you Hanh Tien’s (Emily) beautiful ideas on the similarities between Tấm Cám, a Vietnamese fairy tale, and Cinderella, a tale told in the northern European tradition. These were Hanh Tien’s thoughts, as presented to me on Wednesday morning before school:

“ The common symbol is of each girl’s foot being a good fit for the slipper. Only those shaped by virtue are deemed good enough to wear the slipper. The two heroines possess the universal virtues that all cultures value. Each society’s fairytale is celebrating and teaching the value of humility, integrity and kindness. All humans have a similar psychological make up and therefore we share common dreams and from these dreams come the symbols, for example, the slipper that feature in fairytales across the world.”
(Nguyen Ngoc Hanh Tien, Year 12 IB student)

We can all be inspired by the depth of Hanh Tien’s understanding and her recognition of the central importance of humility, integrity and kindness to all of us. Enjoy the holiday with your families.
