Decisions, Decisions…

Dear Parents

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education

When our students reach Year 10 (aged 14 approximately), they study IGCSEs.  There is a core component to these qualifications, which includes: Mathematics, English, Science, PE and Life Skills.  The core is supplemented by a range of options.

Year 9 IGCSE Information Evening

Last night, was an important and informative evening for our Year 9 BIS Hanoi students.  Teachers and our student ambassadors hosted an evening dedicated to exploring the content and skills learned in our IGCSE programme.  It marked the beginning of an important process, when students select subjects for further study in Year 10 and 11.  The subjects chosen are of particular interest to the students for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes, the subject is mandatory for a career path, whilst on other occasions the subject is simply fascinating, and/or inspiring, stimulating the curious student to learn more.  Our advice is for students to identify why they want to study a chosen range of subjects and use that knowledge as motivation to drive their studies in the IGCSE years.

The IGCSE is the ideal preparation for the IBDP

The value of the IGCSE is that it is an externally assessed, rigorous, academic set of courses that challenge the students to think critically in a range of disciplines. The breadth and depth of the IGCSE courses provide ideal preparation for the IBDP, which is why many schools reject the Middle Years Program (MYP) offered by the International Baccalaureate.  This pattern can be seen in the IB’s own statistics.  In the 2016 summer exam session, there were just 613 schools offering the MYP (for 14-16 year olds), whilst 955 offered the IBDP (for 16-18 year olds).  What are the 300 plus schools, who rejected the MYP doing to prepare for the IBDP?  Typically, schools like ours, that have the highest academic aspirations, recognise that the IBDP requires rigorous academic preparation and therefore invest in Cambridge International, the provider of the IGCSE suite of subjects.

Thank You to our Parents

I would like to end this week’s piece by expressing my gratitude to our parents.  You have provided tremendous support to the school, this year.  Attendance at our parent evenings, International Day and other events has been outstanding.  Your support strengthens our community and inspires the children and their teachers to be at their very best.
