Ms Rebecca Carroll: Weekly Update 01/12/17Primary Student Council

I had the pleasure of dropping into this week’s PSC meeting and listening to the students discussing ways in which we can improve our school. They have been busy reflecting on the success of International Week and getting feedback from across the Primary School. Having carried out a survey and compiled the results they will be informing Ms. Tong of things that went well and suggestions of how we could make it even better. It is wonderful listening to our Young Leaders in Primary talk about issues that are important to them and planning positive steps forward; they are certainly helping our school become even better.

Our Waste Warriors, Playground Buddies and Library Monitors were celebrated and formally introduced in assembly today. They have been presented with their badges and are wearing them with pride. Having these roles not only improves our school environment but also helps our students. They grow in confidence, develop a greater understanding of collective responsibility and of course the opportunity to get to know more students by talking and working with them. These roles are held for a term so there is still plenty of time for others to try out leadership roles in the new year if they are interested.

Early Years

Respect is our theme for this half term and some of our F2 children were giving an important message about good manners today. Ms. Cheska and her helpers were reminding us about kind words such as ‘Please, thank you, I’m sorry, can I help you?’ that we need to remember to use all the time. They showed us how the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs became friends by using kind words.

It has been a busy week in Early Years as we also had the final, in a series of workshops from our EYC staff. Magic Maths was led by Ms. Karissa, Ms. Cat and Ms. Caroline who shared the progression in learning from F1 to Year 1. They shared ideas and games that are practical and can be done at home. Maths is everywhere:

Setting the table, putting on socks and shoes, going to the supermarket, baking and playing in the bath filling up containers.

You’ve got a friend in me

Year 2 students presented an exciting and engaging assembly this afternoon. They taught us about toys from the past and also used Talk4Writing to tell us Toy Story. The children spoke clearly and even got the audience involved. It was great to see the learning journey they have been on and having such fun as they shared it with us. Well done Year 2!

Year 2 Assembly_10

This was followed by our Year 2 Reading workshop. It has been great to see parents coming along and finding our more about reading from Mr. Driver. Next week is the final in the series when we warmly welcome Year 3 parents to come along and learn about how they can support reading at home and get new ideas of authors, genres and different books that might hook the children in.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Rebecca Carroll, Head of Primary
