On Monday, it was lovely to welcome our BIS students back after the spring break and I would like to give a special welcome to our new families from Russia, Japan, Korea, Costa Rica and Vietnam.
At BIS, we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which is a thematic, creative curriculum for primary children, with a clear process of learning and with specific learning goals for every subject. Cross curricular themes, taught using a variety of learning styles, are aimed at making learning fun and meaningful. In addition to structured learning objectives, there is an international dimension to each topic. Encouraging the creation of International-mindedness is important to us at BIS as our mission is to ensure that children grow up with a very clear global understanding.
Every new term brings new IPC topics which are introduced through exciting entry points to stimulate interest. I had the pleasure of joining a band of pirates in F2 on Tuesday for their entry point. After reading pirate stories, the pirate ship was prepared to sail away on an adventure. Hopefully, our BIS pirates are all friendly ones so we are safe for now!
Yesterday, the Year 2 children came dressed as a famous person from the past. I met Florence Nightingale, Mother Theresa, Queen Victoria, John Logie Baird, Lee….and Octavia to name just a few and they were able to tell me facts they had researched about their lives. Next week, the Year 5 children will enter a drama about evacuees to help them understand the effects of world conflicts. Why not ask your children for more details about IPC?
A few weeks ago, we held two parent workshops about how we teach calculations here at BIS. These hands-on sessions, which were led by Mr. Adams, were very well attended and good feedback has been received from parents. Today, we continued our commitment to sharing more information about our curriculum through our workshop explaining how we teach English through Talk for Writing and how we support children with English as an Additional Language (EAL). Our next parent workshop will look at safety on-line. More details will follow very soon.
