Dear Parents,
As I write this, we are coming to the end of our first month in school and so much has happened already. The school is a hive of activity but everything we do is focused on learning for the children. As teachers, we are always trying to enhance learning opportunities for the students in a variety of ways and enrich our curriculum. Collaboration is an important part of learning; the children share ideas, give praise and suggestions for how to make it even better. One example of this is in writing, where the children peer-mark each other’s writing. They carefully read their partner’s work and look for exciting vocabulary, good use of grammar and story structure; the next step is then to suggest ideas of how they can improve it. This is a really powerful learning experience for the children as they engage in a dialogue with their friends and reflect on each other’s learning.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
I am really excited to see the beginning of our Extra- Curricular Activities (ECAs) program starting on Monday. The range of opportunities for students to try new things, learn skills and get to know and build relationships with staff and students from across the whole school are impressive. From Philosophy for Children to Trampolining and Global Challenges to Bushcraft the list goes on and I can’t wait to see the children in action.
Parents’ Evening
In the first week of October we will have our first Parents’ Evening of the academic year. This is a great opportunity to come in and speak to your child’s class teacher about how they have settled into their new class, attitudes to learning and ways in which you can support them at home. We are sending out appointment times, please arrange a time with our EAL teachers if your child is receiving support with their language.
Parent Workshops
Building on the success of last year’s workshops we are starting Reading Workshops for parents over the next few months. This series of workshops will be aimed at year groups and we would like to invite parents into school, after Friday assembly to meet with Mr. Driver, our Primary Literacy Leader. He will share ideas of how you can read at home with your children, share resources and give practical ideas. Please look out for the dates on our website and Facebook page Year 5 will be the first workshop on the 6th October at 14:15 in the Parent Meeting Room.
Wishing you all wonderful weekend!
Ms Rebecca Carroll, Head of Primary
