One of our whole school development priorities is developing excellence in spoken English for all our students. There are many ways in which we do this across the Primary School, but one significant approach is the Speaking program, which our students, from Year 2 upwards, all take part in.

The Primary Speaking Program has been designed to give all children the opportunity to develop their presentation skills. This means children are rehearsing, preparing and focused on the content and delivery of a presentation. Every half term the students prepare and present on a given topic, usually linked to learning or the student’s interest. They are expected to use accurate English, correct grammar tenses and think carefully about their language, pace and the audience to whom they are presenting.

Presenting and speaking in public, be it in the classroom, an assembly or another forum can be challenging for Primary students but by providing these opportunities we encourage, support and build confidence. The speaking program takes place during the school day and in addition to presenting the children also hear the presentations of their peers.

Another valuable element of this program is that whilst it develops speaking and performance it also demands that the audience are active listeners. To do this, the audience have a job to do as well. Through feedback and comments the peers share their opinions on the strengths of the presentation and what can be done to make it even better. In doing this, they are also consolidating their own learning and understanding of this program.

One of our Superheroes - Poppy, teaches us about perseverance and it is this continued hard work and effort combined with the opportunities to perform that will enable our students to become confident public speakers. We are ambitious for our students and know that practising these skills today will support them in becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
