Secondary teachers STEAMed into the new year with MIT challenges

Secondary teachers STEAMed into the new year with an active training session designed to inform them about the nature of the MIT challenges, a key focus of the collaboration between Nord Anglia Education and MIT.

Teachers were set three different challenges:

  • To create a wearable technology to enhance a superhero’s ability based on the work of Leia Stirling.
  • Observe the animal kingdom to develop a superhero using bio-inspired design, taking inspiration from the work of professor Annette Hosoi.
  • Create an assistive or therapeutic device to improve the lives of people with injuries or disabilities, based on Professor Chris Voight’s work in biophysics.

It was a really enjoyable morning and our teachers generated an array of innovative ideas. Octospy is a superhero which uses the same mechanisms as cephalopods to blend in to its surroundings. Teachers designed a suit which would exploit the human eye’s ability to only see red, green and blue light, incorporating thousands of LEDs on the suit to mimic its environment.

Another group designed a suit which incorporated sensors and actuators which tightens as it detects external stimuli. Visualise is an assistive device which reacts to the wearer’s surroundings, informing them of any obstacles. Teachers carefully considered issues faced by the visually impaired.

The STEAM challenges at BIS Hanoi are designed to encourage critical thinking & problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. We are preparing our students as future leaders of change who care about each other and the environment and we hope these challenges will inspire them to think about ways to solve global issues in the future.
