Science

A Look Back at Science in 2019 - 2020!

It has been another exciting year in the world of science!

It has been another exciting year in the world of science! So much has happened it seems more than a year ago that we welcomed Dr Loft into our science family; with all of the experience and energy he brought with him his induction into our successful department was seamless.

Science

We were blessed this year with investment into our department for a full suite of Vernier data loggers; these devices help students record data from multiple sources at the same time with greater precision and greater reliability than is humanly possible using standard measuring devices, we have used them across all key stages and across all four sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Sports Science). Students are able to wirelessly link their laptops to these devices and so the acquisition of data is not only a strength of BIS Hanoi Science but now a strength of our students, a strength that not only improves the level of your children's science but also the level of enjoyment during our numerous practicals each day.

Science

Investigative skills were identified as an area we wanted our students to become experts in this year, to this end we have made this our focus for the year across all Key stages. Our students were already very good in this area, we provide practicals in 80% of all lessons but we realised that the world is moving, ever increasingly, towards digitisation and we felt that we needed to reflect this in our provision and equip your children with the skills needed in these modern times. Since the start of the year we have observed a greater enjoyment for our subject from the students, a larger appetite for asking the difficult questions and the desire to seek the solution through practical means. We couldn’t have asked for more from our students, they really are superb!

Science

I am very proud of the abilities of my teaching team but without the support of our technicians we could only have carried out a fraction of these practicals, we are indebted to the hard work of Mrs Thuoc Nguyen and Miss Ngoc Bui.

Science

With a department full of energy, experience and talent we embarked upon a fresh syllabus for Key Stage 3 culminating in Project Based Learning in Year 9.

We explored:

  • the world of Forensics and how many facets of science have to be blended together by talented forensic scientists
  • the precise world of Food technology was uncovered so the students were able to build diets based upon knowledge of individual body types, activity levels and dietary needs
  • how human beings can live ‘off grid’ using the latest in sustainable technologies in the wildest of habitats
  • the incredible world of Sports Science, appreciating how it has helped athletes of all disciplines hone their abilities and push boundaries further than was thought possible before and using that to reflect upon how it can help them in their lives.

Virtual learning was a challenge for all concerned but, along with every other subject in the school, science rose to this with a fully scientific approach; hypotheses from our teachers were sought and put forward, preliminary tests were conducted, reflection upon our provision gained/acted upon, accurate results were gained and excellent conclusions drawn. Subsequently lots of exciting online programs/platforms were used by our science teachers resulting in many positive, happy students giving us great feedback. All four sciences worked together to provide relevant and thought-provoking resources to keep the enthusiasm going whilst everyone was away from school.

Happily for our exam groups we had covered almost all of our curriculum before the beginning of the virtual learning meaning we only needed a few weeks to finish off, this was a great relief to both Year 11 & Year 13 science students. Impressively, we had also managed to complete all coursework before the lockdown was implemented in its fullest, with this complete coverage we were subsequently in an excellent position for their exams.

Science

We wouldn’t be scientists if we didn’t reflect upon our journey this year and our reflection has shown many, many advances/accomplished ambitions that we can build upon next year. These huge gains have stemmed from pushing our students, pushing ourselves and pushing our boundaries. We are very excited about the next academic year where we will be ambitious once again to continue to provide the best education in science possible for your children.

Your ever gorgeous Science Commander in chief,

Lord Forsythe of Lewisham
