It is always very satisfying when you are seen to be achieving the goals that you set yourself. As you are aware, at BVIS we strive to enable children to become proficiently bilingual and this is a fundamental component of our Mission Statement:

The British Vietnamese International School is a unique bilingual international school, providing an outstanding education through dual language instruction in English and Vietnamese. Our personalised approach to your child’s education enables them to achieve outstanding academic results today, whilst developing the skills and mind-set to thrive in the changing world of tomorrow.

This week I was delighted to hear that the Phonics workshop presented by Ms. Trang and Ms. Lynsey was not only well attended, but our parents were very engaged, asking lots of questions about how they could support their children’s learning at home and about the Vietnamese Phonics program that we have developed ‘in-house’ and is therefore unique to our school.

So, it was with great pride when I received videos from one of our Year 3 students, in her third year at our school, reading a book out loud “My Mum is Fantastic” by Nick Butterworth. The book is written in English and our talented student read it beautifully, substituting the words ‘My Mum is Fantastic’ for the name of her English teacher “Mr. Matthew is Fantastic”. In her second video, she translated the entire text into Vietnamese as she read, substituting ‘My Mum is Fantastic’ for the name of her Vietnamese teacher “Cô Trang is Fantastic”. An English text read in English, then translated into Vietnamese, with text substitutions. A truly proficient bilingual!
