Northbridge IB Diploma students can look forward to exciting new changes in Mathematics Northbridge International School Cambodia students who are entering the Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12) in the 2019 academic year will have 4 new Mathematic courses to select from. These new courses reflect the exciting changes that are happening in the Mathematics department as a result of DP courses undergoing a curriculum review over a seven-year cycle.

Northbridge International School Cambodia students who are entering the Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12) in the 2019 academic year will have 4 new Mathematic courses to select from. These new courses reflect the exciting changes that are happening in the Mathematics department as a result of DP courses undergoing a curriculum review over a seven-year cycle.

The purpose of the review is to make sure the curriculum reflects the changes happening around the world and incorporates the new research completed in the field of education, along with refining changes from the existing curriculum.

The new mathematics courses have been designed for students to become more internationally minded, and enable students to develop the attributes of the learner profile and the IB mission.

This in turn will help Northbridge students develop 21st Century skills that will help them prepare for life after graduation.

Moreover, the DP Mathematics programme will continue to be rigorous and these changes will be in effect for all Northbridge students from 2019 until 2028.

The greatest benefit for Northbridge students is that it will provide greater flexibility for students selecting their DP courses, and enables more of our students to choose Mathematics at a higher level.

The new mathematic courses will also reflect the need for students to become strong critical thinkers.

Growing evidence has shown that employers are looking for individuals that are able to critically think in mathematics, with the ability to use technology to solve problems.

In addition, students will be asked to apply relevant mathematical approaches to familiar and unfamiliar situations which creates a stronger link to the MYP programme that Northbridge students are transitioning from in grade 10 to the Diploma Programme.

All 4 courses that are available will empower students to connect technology and mathematics together to interpret and solve real world problems.

The new courses that will be offered for incoming Diploma candidate students will be Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretations.

Below is a brief overview of what each of the following courses covers both in content and skills, a look at University programmes that recognize these subjects and what type of student will best succeed in each course.

 

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

This course will be offered to students in both Standard level and Higher level. The course caters for students who are excellent at constructing mathematical arguments which is depicted by their strength from their MYP Investigations, and have a strong ability to develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.

The course will explore real and abstract applications, with some use of technology and have a lot of mathematical problem solving and generalization.

The course will have a stronger focus on Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.

Universities will accepts both SL and HL courses for life sciences programmes, economics programmes and the HL course will be an accepted requirement for Engineering and Computer Science programmes. Furthermore, the HL course will be a prerequisite for pure Mathematics programmes and physics based programmes.

This course is strongly recommended to students who come from an MYP 5 extended Math class, or have shown strong MYP 5 Standard results.

 

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations

This course will be offered to students in both Standard level and Higher level. The course caters for students who are interested in developing their mathematics for describing the world around them.

This will include a lot of modelling and solving practical problems using a lot of different forms of technology.

The course will have a strong focus with functions, probability, statistics, and calculus with technology usage.

University programmes such as Medicine, Engineering and Economics will require higher level Applications maths. Students who will be going into programmes that do not involve a lot of math will be encouraged to take the Standard level Applications course.
