Why learning phonics is an integral part of Primary learning at Northbridge Learning phonics allows children to build a solid foundation of understanding of how words work, which allows them to become great readers and writers. It is an integral part of learning for our lower Primary students at Northbridge International School Cambodia, and we have been working with parents on how they can support their children at home.

Learning phonics allows children to build a solid foundation of understanding of how words work, which allows them to become great readers and writers. It is an integral part of learning for our lower Primary students at Northbridge International School Cambodia, and we have been working with parents on how they can support their children at home. To find out more about the importance of a phonics-based approach to learning reading, click here.

In October, we ran a Parent Phonics Workshop, which introduced parents to our phonics programme, Letters and Sounds, and went over the basics of the sounds our students learn and the blending and segmenting skills they learn in order to read and write. Click here to learn more about our first workshop.

Parents learned that blending is the skill through which children identify the sounds in a word and blend them (push them together) in order to read. Segmenting is the inverse of blending, in which children segment (break apart) words into their sounds in order to write them. These skills can be developed even before children learn to recognise letters through oral blending and segmenting activities.

In December, we will be hosting a second Parent Phonics Workshop, which will offer parents the chance to learn some practical games, songs, and activities that they can use with their children at home to support their learning in phonics. There will be a chance for parents to try out the games and activities with one another during the workshop.

We look forward to seeing many of our parent community at the workshop. This workshop is aimed at supporting parents of children in EL3 to Grade 2.
