Year 13s Complete Their Extended Essays

Last week the Year 13 IB students handed in their Extended Essays that they have been working on for the last year.

The Extended Essay is one of the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme. Along with the Theory of Knowledge course and CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) hours, this must be completed on top of the six subjects that students study.

Each student selects a topic and a research question that interests them and the Extended Essays must be 4,000 words long. This year we have had students writing their essays on a variety of different subjects including Biology, Economics, Visual Arts, Maths, Physics, Geography, Business & Management, Film, Music, History, Chemistry, English, Korean and Chinese. Just like university students writing their dissertation, each IB student has a supervisor who advises them in their research and writing and they have been working with this teacher over the past months.

Last week was the deadline for students to finish their Extended Essays and on Monday, Year 13 all came into school dressed to depict the subject of their essay. We had a banana, the Pearl Tower, a calculator, a skeleton, lots of country flags and someone covered in water bottles!

The Year 13s presented to the Year 12s, who are just about to start the work on their essays, to give them an introduction to the Extended Essay, the work involved and how rewarding it can be. Well done to all the Year 13s and good luck to the Year 12s!

Below are some of the titles of this year’s Extended Essays, to give an idea of the scope of research our students have been doing.

  • To what extent has the devaluation in the Argentinian peso affected the Argentinian economy?
  • To what extent are the pricing strategies used by the firms on the second floor (the jewelry section) of Shanghai Hongqiao international Pearl City Co. Ltd showing the aspects of perfect competition and price discrimination?
  • To what extent has the recent F1 Grand Prix in Austria affected the local economy?
  • Investigation on how the transport of mass affects the power, velocity and stability of a toy helicopter.
  • To what extent does language and gender determine the use of written communication at home and at work in the Mexican society?
  • To what extent did Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler use similar tactics to establish a totalitarian regime?
  • How has the photography advanced from the 19th century to 21st century?; in comparison with works of Lady Clementina Hawarden’ and ‘Tierney Gearon’.
  • How did the dystopian work ‘We’ by Yevgeny Zamyatin, an early 20th century novel, influence the representation of dystopia shown in some of the more iconic texts of the century?
  • To what extent would Damming the river Rufiji at Steigler’s Gorge be beneficial to the development and sustainability of the village Mloka, a village increasingly susceptible to drought?
