How long have you been a Primary Librarian at BISS Puxi? I have been working in the Primary Library since February 2014.
What do you enjoy most about working in our Primary Library? It gives me great joy to see our children enjoy the library sessions as much as they do. They sit around in groups and chat about books and they love it when teachers read to them. I really enjoy seeing their happy faces when we have displayed new books on the shelves. I just generally love it when children get excited about books and lose themselves in the universe of books.
What was your favourite book as a child? Why did you enjoy it so much? I would always ask my mother again and again to read ‘The Brothers Lionheart’ by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. It is a children's fantasy novel from 1973 about two brothers who both die and meet again in a magical and, at times, dangerous place called Nangijala. Its themes are quite dark and sad for a children's book, but the book is also filled with loyalty, hope and brotherly love, and I remember that it moved me greatly. I will have to pick it up again sometime soon and read it through an adult's eyes.
Who is your favourite children’s author and why? I am fascinated by authors such as Mo Willems and Jon Klassen, who are able to create great books for younger children using a seemingly simple language and drawings that appeal to kids, but with small twists of irony and dark humour, that adults will enjoy. Much like Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales that contain the obvious traditional stories that children will understand, but also elements of criticism of society that adults will pick up.
What do you enjoy doing with your family in Shanghai? I have two teenage boys and as a general rule they prefer not to spend too much time with their parents! However, when we do get to see them we like to watch a good movie or have dinner together in a restaurant. My husband and I like to go downtown and explore the streets of Shanghai. We all love the different sporting opportunities in the area around BISS Puxi and in particular we play tennis, basketball and swim.
Where are you from and what do you miss most from home? I am from the second largest town in Denmark called Aarhus. It is close to the sea and beach and I miss the feeling of having nature nearby and letting my dog run in the forest. I also miss Danish sausages, quality bacon and long, light summer evenings.
