European Day of Languages

28 september 2017

September 26  was the European Day of Languages. It aims to celebrate the diversity of languages around the world and to promote language learning in order to increase multilingualism and intercultural understanding.

In BISS, we had a week of celebrations lead by our Language leaders who collectively organised a range of exciting activities through the week. Language students sang at lunch time – ‘It was rocking, cheerful and hugely popular’ said Irina Brannasch, Head of MFL. We also had quizzes in form time and a Global Landmark quiz – winners to be announced after the holidays.

On Tuesday 26 September

We launched the celebrations with uplifting singing performances in French, German and Spanish by Year 9 language students. Language leader Efje Boulnois (Y11) sold country tattoos and stickers to raise money for the Tanzanian Seeway charity. We also showed our enjoyment of languages by writing the word ‘to inspire’ on a Word Wall in languages from around the world.

Wednesday 26 September

We were entertained during lunch by a rousing performance from the Year 7 language students as they sang in French, German and Spanish. Dhairya Patel and Nathalia Jolly also arranged to celebrate internationalism by giving free face paint flags and by making mini-cupcakes to raise money for the Tanzanian Seeway charity. On the Word Wall this day, we wrote ‘learn together’ in languages from around the world.

Thursday 28 September

For the finale of the week, the Year 8 language learners gave lively performances in French, German and Spanish. At lunch time, there were MFL-themed cupcakes on sale to raise further funds for Tanzania. Students also marked where they come from on a world map with a red sticker!
Chiara Dell’Oro (Y11) said: ‘ We aim to make the all the nationalities represented at this school a visual piece of art! ‘. A further artistic addition to the corridor was a Word Wall with ‘International’ written in over 30 languages.

Thank you to all who took part and to the Language Leaders for their organisation and participation in these fun activities.

Fiona McConnon, Assistant Head (Head of Global Languages)
