A Dramatic Interpretation of the Compass

Congratulations to all 12 participants from BISS Puxi on the first Nord Anglia Theatre Festival run in conjunction with ISTA (the International School’s Theatre Association) which was hosted by NACIS on Thursday 7 November – Saturday 9 November.

Eighty students from six different Regional Nord Anglia Education schools met to collaborate on a project based on The Compass – a Chinese idea that has been universally celebrated as one of the great inventions.

With this as a starting point, the students worked with four top directors and were guided in a series of drama activities culminating a group performance that the students directed and had created themselves.

Why a compass? The idea is to find a starting point that is based on the origins of where the students are and the compass provides many interesting questions about identity that are worthy of exploration and have been the basis for dramas across the world.

Who are we and where are we going? How do we meet and connect with other countries and peoples? What different journeys are people on and how has life experiences affected these?

Devising theatre (creating theatre from a starting point) is a core component in both IGCSE Drama and IB Theatre at Diploma Level. It is how many great Dramas have been created – and the inspirational weekend connected many of our students in a creative and theatrical project.

Congratulations to all our students!

Nigel de Sousa, Head of Drama
