LEARNING THEME

As we approach International week and leave our theme of space we will think about our very own planet and the wonderful places we can explore. This week we will travel around the world and learn to count with Granny on her worldwide, whirlwind shopping trip! With bright colourful illustrations and funny, rhythmic text ‘My Granny Went to Market’introduces children to the concept of travel and the many wonders of the world we live in!

Granny will travel to and collect something from…

1-      Istanbul – a flying carpet

2-      Thailand – puyin and puchai cats

3-      Mexico - masks

4-      Switzerland – a cow bell

5-      Japan – kites

6-      Russia – Russian dolls

7-      Peru – llamas

8-      Africa – African drums

9-      China – lanterns

10-    Australia – a boomerang

If you have any of these at home we would love to take a look and explore what they really look like!

Each of the five Nursery classrooms will be turned into a different country from the book. Why don’t you come take a walk through the rooms and have a guess at where in the world we are!

We will sing the song :

She’ll be flying on a carpet (To the tune of ‘She’ll be coming round the mountain’)

She’ll be flying on a carpet when she comes

She’ll be flying on a carpet when she comes

She’ll be flying on a carpet, flying to the market

She’ll be flying on a carpet when she comes!

MATHS

This week our Mathematical focus will be on repeated patterns. We see this many times in the book, for example the boomerangs from Australia are decorated with repeated patterns.  The children who are new to this will make simple patterns using two to three shapes. The children who are revisiting this will need to create patterns by choosing and using both  their own shapes and colours.

Key Vocabulary: patterns, repeated patterns, shape, shape names and colours.

EXPRESIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

As we move away from our space theme the children thought hard about where they would like to take their learning. We dissussed a few options and they choose to create ‘Shanghai Airport!’  This was a fantastic talking point and really made the children think about their own experiences.  They were asked what the airport looks like and what would we have in our own Nursery airport?  They have really taken ownership over the roleplay space. The children have been very creative and made a check in desk, security detector and of course a big plane to take us on our travels . When they were asked what else they could add- they suggested ‘ Burger King’ and  a Noodle bar.  What well travelled children we have!
