Book Fair: 5-7 May

MESSAGES

  • On Tuesday 10 May, Year 1 will be going on an exciting educational visit to Minhang Cultural Park. This visit is connected to our Themed Learning unit, Plants and Insects. Please see the letter which has been sent home via communication books for more details or contact your child’s class teacher.
  • Please ensure your child has a named sunhat to wear at school for the summer term.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy we will be reading the book- A Diary of a Fly written by Doreen Cronin. We will be learning about the different features of diary writing and recounts. Children will then plan and write a diary entry for a different insect.

PHONICS

Puffer Fish- Phase 6- The Puffer Fish phonics group will be continuing to focus on the use of suffixes. This week we will focus on adding  ‘ing’ to the end of words. We will focus on the vocabulary- swimming, climbing, playing, helping, walking, talking and eating.

Starfish – Phase 5 - This week the children will learn the alternative pronunciation of the letter ‘i’.They will learn to read polysyllabic words using alternative pronunciations of ‘i’such as: childish, reminded, grinding, tinopener, mindmap. We will also practise reading and spelling the High Frequency Words: water, where and day.

Jelly Fish- Phase 4 – This week the Jellyfish have started learning about the sounds; ay and  ou. We are learning to spell them with accuracy and use them in sentences with correctly.

Stingray – The Stingrays will be comparing the sound ey,  to ee which usually goes at the end of a sentence. We will learn the spellings monkey, money and chimney as well as the tricky words were and called.

Octopus  - Beginning Phase 4 –  This week in the octopus group we will continue to look at consonant clusters such as cl lp and tr. We are reading longer words and need to sound out carefully to spell them correctly. We will practise the tricky words little and one.

Sharks – Beginning Phase 3 - Sharks will be practising High Frequency Words using word games and will practise writing them in sentences.                                                                                                          

MATHS

In Maths this week the children will continue to learn about place value and apply this knowledge to real life situations using 10p and 1p coins in the role play area. We will also revisit halving and quarters and learn to divide opjects by sharing.

THEMED LEARNING

In Themed Learning this week we will look at the migration path that butterflies take. Did you know they can fly for hundreds of kilometres? We will learn about why they travel and where they’re going.

Literacy- diary, recount, events, adjectives, months of the year, days of the week, first, next,then, after, lastly, insects.

DUTCH

De kinderen van year 1 hebben heel hard nagedacht over welk huisdier ze willen kopen in het dierenwinkeltje.  Een konijn, een hamster of misschien wel een slang?  Deze week komen we  te weten wat deze huisdieren nodig hebben voor hun verzorging en maken de kinderen elk een dierenpaspoort.
