Learning At Our Shanghai Middle School
Key Stage 3 pupils get used to no longer being taught in form groups. We teach all of our subjects in groups where students will be in a set with other people who have a similar level of ability. We find that this kind of grouping works well for most students as it challenges them to an appropriate degree. We regularly keep an eye on whether or not students are in the right set and will move them if necessary.
Students get to grips with a wide range of subjects during their middle school years, all taught by specialist teachers who are real enthusiasts for their own subject. As pupils progress through years 7 to 9, they begin to form an idea of their own strengths and interests.
As an international school, we realise that languages are important, and our programme is designed so that students will have time to study two, which students are able to choose themselves. The choices we offer are Mandarin, French, German and Spanish, although students can only select Spanish when they get to year 9. If students aren’t native or fluent English speakers and they find working in English difficult, they can also choose EAL instead of one of their language options.
All the subjects students will study are described in our curriculum guide, but, as always, ask us if you’d like to know more about any of them.
